  • Haematology and erythrocyte metabolism in man at high altitude

Open Access•J Arnaud, Nancy Gutierrez et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1985•Cited by: 1•References: 5

In the course of haematological and biological investigations among Aymara and Quechua populations in Bolivia, an anthropological study of the erythrocytary respiratory function was carried out on the two groups at two altitudes: 3,600 m and 450 m. A difference in the intensity of the biological variations of the two populations is observed at high altitude. In the Quechuas, as in any lowland native, the adaptative phenomena are totally and quick…

  • Plasma cholinesterase variants in population samples from south-west France

Open Access•Hugues Vergnes, J Sevin et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1981

The results of a study of distribution of plasma cholinesterase types in some Pyrenean groups (south-west of France) are reported. The samples examined were collected in several rural communities. The individuals tested were natives from the different areas. The data show significant differences between the geographic zones. At E1 locus the frequency of Ea1 gene reaches higher values in Luz Saint-Sauveur valley (7.7%). Among Basques and other gro…

  • Methaemoglobin and erythrocyte reducing systems in high-altitude natives

    Open Access•J Arnaud, J C Quilici et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1979

The stress of chronic hypobaric hypoxia present at high altitudes induces a series of adaptive changes in the intermediate metabolism in erythrocytes of high-altitude natives. Aymaras of the high Andean Plateau are shown to have within erythrocytes: (a) increased activity of NADH2 (GAPDH) generating stages, (b) decreased activity of NADH2 (LDH) consuming steps, (c) significantly increased methaemoglobin content, and (d) a large increase in the le…

  • Polymorphism of erythrocyte G‐6‐PD in the baboon

Open Access•D Gourdin, Hugues Vergnes et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1972

Blood samples from several populations of baboons (genus Papio ) were examined for G‐6‐PD variants. Several G‐6‐PD phenotypes were detected by starch gel electrophoresis. The so‐called fast variant phenotypes of G‐6‐PD in baboons differ from human variant phenotypes in several physicochemical constants
