Experiences of sexual and gender minority students at traditionally Christian and nonreligious institutions of higher education
Sexual Attraction and Perceived Relational Insecurity in Sexual Minorities of Mixed Orientation Marriages
Mixed-orientation marriages, where partners have differing sexual orientations, remain understudied despite their unique relational dynamics. This study examined relationships between sexual attraction and relational insecurity in 113 sexual minority individuals in mixed-orientation marriages, investigating whether religiousness served as a protective or risk factor. Results showed that same-sex attraction is linked to relational anxiety, while o…
Journeys of Side B transgender Christians
Relatively little research exists on the experiences of transgender and gender-diverse Christians. This study explores the experiences of 13 Side B transgender Christians. Side B refers to a typology developed by Bridges Across the Divide (Citationn.d.) to foster dialogue among sexual minority Christians. While Side A refers to Christians who view same-sex behaviour as morally permissible in certain contexts (e.g., marriage), Side B views such be…

“Coming Out” to Parents in a Christian Context
Disclosures of same-sex attraction are some of the most difficult experiences for lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) individuals. For LGB individuals of faith, disclosure to parents is often complicated by the intersection of religion/spirituality and sexuality. This study presents a grounded theory about a particular subgroup to address gaps in the literature concerning how LGB students on Christian college campuses describe and experience their p…
God Concept, God Image, and Religious Orientation in Same-Gender Attracted Christians
Same-gender attracted Christians can arrive at very different conclusions as to how to live in congruence with their religious values. In an attempt to understand what might contribute to this difference a quantitative examination of God concept (rational knowledge of God), God image (experiential knowledge of God), and the role of religion was conducted. A total of 156 gay-affirming and 59 traditional-believing same-gender attracted (SGA) Christ…
Shame and Psychosocial Development in Religiously Affiliated Sexual Minority Women
Shame and psychosocial developmental difficulties are issues of concern for many sexual minority women most likely due to the negative impact of heterosexism, internalized homophobia, sexual stigma, religious affiliation, and sexual minority stress. This study hypothesizes that religiously affiliated sexual minority women, when compared to non-sexual minority women, would show significantly higher levels of shame and lower levels of psychosocial …
Psychopathology through the Eyes of Faith
The Study of Calamities of Soul We approach study of psychopathology in these terms: the study of calamities of soul, by which we mean that students are learning how to assess, treat, and prevent concerns that affect whole person, embodied soul. Stated differently, something is lost in study of psychopathology when we focus only on deviance, dysfunction, danger, or distress (i.e., traditional understanding of abnormal behavior). Rather, we see st…
Sexual Minorities in Faith-Based Higher Education
Studies on faith-based campuses are beginning to offer a glimpse into the real experience of sexual minority students in these unique settings. This study adds to this growing body of information by surveying 247 undergraduates, who describe themselves as sexual minorities at 19 Christian schools across the United States. They responded to questions related to attitudes regarding sexuality, sexual identity, religiosity, and sexual milestone event…
Integration in the Study of Homosexuality, GLBT Issues, and Sexual Identity
This article examines integration in the areas of homosexuality, gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender (GLBT) issues, and sexual identity. It provides a brief account of where we have been as a field in our attempts to bring together a Christian worldview and the study of these issues. It then moves to a discussion of where we are going as a field, as well as the challenges and opportunities that exist for Christians interested in the integrati…

Listening to Sexual Minorities on Christian College Campuses
This study investigated two areas of interest in the literature on sexual minorities: milestone events in sexual identity development and campus climate for sexual minorities in young adulthood. What is unique is that the information is obtained from Christian sexual minorities attending Christian colleges or universities. A sample of 104 undergraduate sexual minority students at three Council of Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU) member …

Sexual Identity Development and Synthesis among LGB-Identified and LGB Dis-Identified Persons
What are the key milestone events that facilitate sexual identity among persons who experience same-sex attraction? Do those milestone events lead to one outcome, or are multiple outcomes possible with respect to how sexual identity develops and synthesizes over time? This initial pilot study compared 14 religiously-affiliated persons who integrated their experiences of same-sex attraction into a lesbian, gay, or bisexual (LGB) identity synthesis…
Ethical issues in considering 'religious impairment' in diagnosis
There are several ethical implications of clinician assessment of clinically significant religious impairment (CSRI). This paper draws upon the American Psychological Association's (APA's) Code of Ethics (1992) to review relevant ethical principles and standards. It then presents a continuum of responses to the relationship between psychology and religion: (1) religion as harmful, (2) benign neglect of religion, (3) formal: problem-focused, (4) f…
A Study of two Marital Enrichment Programs and Couples’ Quality of Life
The need for empirical research that contributes to the prevention and arrest of marital distress is increasing. Factors identified through research as being influential in the stability of marriage include intimacy, positive behaviors, social support, good communication, and conflict management. Although a variety of marital enrichment programs that address these same factors do exist, this current study addresses two particular marital enrichme…
Depression, Creativity, and Religion
Increased interest in the relationship between creativity and depression has led to popular and professional discussions of the experiences of highly creative persons who suffer from depression or mania. There has also been parallel interest in religion, spirituality, and religious coping in American culture and in professional mental health organizations, such as the American Psychological Association. It is surprising, then, that there has been…

Human Sexuality in a Sexually Polymorphous World
There is no question about the fact that human sexuality in our world today manifests an incredibly broad spectrum of values, attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors. Our own nation is host to hundreds of different ethnic and cultural groups, each with its own views and practices of sexuality. In the world at large, almost 200 different nations have an array of cultures within them as well (Rathus, Nevid, & Fichner-Rathus, 2002). Such incredible divers…
Human Sexuality in a Sexually Polymorphous World, Part II
noted in the introduction to Part I, we live in a world that manifests a complex and often confusing array of values, attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors regarding human sexuality, particularly in the midst of the current context of postmodern thought. Elaine Storkey (2001) observes, most social commentators, post-modernity marks the end of any single, that attempts to offer valid explanations (p. 52). In the absence of such a unifying worldview an…

Group Therapies for Homosexuals Seeking Change
The purpose of this article is to review the literature on group therapies for homosexuals who report distress concerning their experience of same-sex attraction. There are a number of methodological limitations to the research published between the 1950s and 1970s, and it is misleading to present this research as decisive evidence that sexual orientation can be changed. In addition, various contemporary professional and religion-based paraprofes…
Resources from Reformed Spirituality for Christian Spiritual Formation in Clinical Practice
The purposes of this article are to introduce the reader to Reformed theology and to begin to discuss implications of Reformed spirituality on the practice of Christian psychology. A discussion of a case example will be utilized to consolidate the reader's understanding of the Reformed theological tradition and its application to Christian spiritual formation in a clinical setting. This article implies that the impact of Reformed theology and spi…

Paraprofessional Christian Ministries for Sexual Behavior and Same-Sex Identity Concerns
Paraprofessional Christian ministries for sexual behavior and same-sex identity concerns have grown significantly in recent years. Some ministries are affiliated with organizations that have specific standards for affiliation; others are independent. Some emphasize change of sexual orientation; others promote change of behavior and chastity. Some ministries provide services exclusively to homosexuals; others provide resources to homosexuals and h…
