Schools are a common place where the younger generation can develop their understanding of the ocean and acquire the skills needed to become responsible and knowledgeable ocean advocates. Grounded in a relational ocean literacy model, this study examined outcomes of a place‐based programme integrating picture books, beach excursions and creative classroom activities to enhance primary students' understanding of and connections to their local temp…

  • Engaging diverse voices across sites of curriculum making in Australia

Open Access•Kerri Anne Garrard, Rebecca Cairns et al.•ARTICLE•The Australian Educational…•2025

Research to date has pointed out that during periods of curriculum reform, public debate gets politicised resulting in an over-emphasis on top-down approaches to curriculum making. As a group of curriculum inquiry researchers, we are concerned that teachers, students, school leaders and community organisations are often side-lined as integral curriculum actors in curriculum making processes. This paper challenges top-down, discipline-siloed conce…

Open Access•Luci Pangrazio, Glenn Auld et al.•ARTICLE•Educational Philosophy and Theory•2024•Cited by: 2•References: 4

Educational institutions increasingly rely on digital platforms to deliver content and learning, monitor attendance, communicate with stakeholders, and evaluate institutional performance. Despite the efficiency and accessibility gains they offer, digital platforms are powered by personal data which, through a process of datafication, can be used to track, monitor, and profile staff and students. The insights drawn from this data can be used to sh…

Opportunities to interrogate praxis through professional learning and reflection is common for school teachers but is not straightforward or as frequently practised by tertiary educators, particularly from across different universities. In this article, the authors who are arts educators from various universities explore a framework that focuses on ‘quality’ visual art education. The aim was to ascertain if an ontology could be enacted to inform …

  • The role of aesthetics in learning science in an art-science lesson

Shelley Hannigan, Per‐Olof Wickman et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Science…•2022

In this paper, we analyse results from one classroom session within an 8-week program in which Year 10 students constructed ‘trash’ puppets of endangered Australian animals. In making the puppets and using them as part of a ‘theatre in a suitcase’ performance at Melbourne Zoo, students were expected to integrate both scientific and artistic goals to demonstrate knowledge of specific endangered species. In this process, students needed to learn ho…
