  • Impact of maternal alcoholism on separation of children from their mothers

Margaret Goldberg, Margaret E Goldberg et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Orthopsychiatry•1996

Patterns of maternal child co-residence among 25 alcoholic women incarcerated for drunk driving are examined. Two-thirds of these mothers reported significant periods of time, not due to incarceration, when minor children did not reside with them. Fewer than half of the placements were mandated by child-protective services. Having two or more children while actively alcoholic or residing with a substance abuser correlated strongly with separate r…

  • Drinking Patterns during Work-Contingent and NonContingent Alcohol Acquisition

    Nancy K Mello, Jack H Mendelson•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1972

Drinking patterns of alcoholics were compared under conditions which allowed unrestricted access to alcohol (N = 18), and where it was necessary to perform a simple operant task in order to obtain both alcohol and cigarettes (N = 8). Work-contingent alcohol acquisition was characterized by alternations between drinking episodes of 3-6 days, and relatively abstinent work periods of 2-3 days which were usually associated with partial withdrawal sig…

  • Adrenal Function and Alcoholism

Jack H Mendelson, MOTOI OGATA et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1971

An increase in serum cortisol levels was found in alcoholic subjects during a period of 11-29 consecutive days of experimentally induced ethanol intoxication. Elevated serum cortisol levels were correlated with a progressive increase in blood alcohol levels, indicating a general dose response relationship. However, blood alcohol levels were Subluenced by factors other than the dose of alcohol ingested. Such factors included intercurrent gastroint…

  • Adrenal Function and Alcoholism

MOTOI OGATA, Jack H Mendelson et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1971

Urinary excretion of catecholamines and their metabolites were determined in alcoholic subjects during chronic ethanol ingestion and after alcohol withdrawal. A dose response relationship was found between magnitude of blood alcohol levels and increased excretion of epinephrine, metanephrine, norepinephrine and noremetanephrine. Maximal excretion of epinephrine occurred when subjects developed withdrawal signs and symptoms after they had stopped …

  • Electrolytes and Osmolality in Alcoholics During Experimentally Induced Intoxication

MOTOI OGATA, Jack H Mendelson et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1968

Serum and urine osmolality and electrolytes were measured in 6 alcoholic subjects prior to, during, and following a period of experimentally induced ethanol intoxication. A significant increase in serum osmolality was correlated with increased levels of serum sodium. Diuresis only occurred during the initial phase of alcohol administration and did not persist during prolonged drinking. Hematocrit levels decreased although dietary and vitamin inta…

  • Factors Affecting Alcohol Consumption in Primates

    Nancy K Mello, Jack H Mendelson•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1966

The effects of avoidance conditioning, punishment and free-choice experience with etlianol (15%) on subsequent ethanol consumption were examined in primates (Macaco, mulatta). Punishment (intermittent presentation of a noxious, unavoidable electric shock) had no demonstrable effect on etlianol consumption. Avoidance conditioning did not increase the ethanol consumption of a monkey that refused ethanol in a free-choice situation. Avoidance conditi…
