  • Exploring spatial non-stationarity of child labour and its related factors: A multiscale geographically weighted regression study of India

    Open Access•Tom Cunningham, T J Cunningham et al.•ARTICLE•Applied Geography•2024

The relationships between various factors and child labour have been explored in the literature but, despite findings that suggest the predictive factors of child labour can vary according to context, there has been little research that has used spatial methods of analysis or attempted to estimate local relationships between covariates and the prevalence of child labour. This paper seeks to address this knowledge gap by using geographically weigh…

    Open Access•Tom Cunningham•ARTICLE•History Workshop Journal•2022

This article is a study of the role of the Church of Scotland Mission within the labour system in colonial Kenya at the start of the twentieth century. With their ‘Gospel of Work’, their government-funded technical apprenticeship scheme, and a series of legal-political interventions to regulate the settler economy, the Mission played a crucial role in the augmentation of the colonial state and capitalism in Kenya’s highlands. Examining how this o…

  • These Our Games” – Sport and the Church of Scotland Mission to Kenya, c. 1907–1937

    Open Access•Tom Cunningham•ARTICLE•History in Africa•2015•Cited by: 1•References: 18

In this article I use oral and documentary evidence gathered during recent fieldwork and archival research in the UK and Kenya to explore the ways in which the Church of Scotland Mission to Kenya attempted to use sport to “civilize” and “discipline” the people of Central Kenya. I make a case for the important contributions the topic of sport can make to the study of African and colonial history, and offer a comprehensive critique of the only book…

  • The Incumbency Effects of Signalling

Open Access•FRANCESCO CASELLI, Tom Cunningham et al.•ARTICLE•Economica•2014•Cited by: 5•References: 33

Much literature on political behaviour treats politicians as motivated by re‐election, choosing actions to signal their types to voters. We identify a novel implication of incumbent signalling. Because incumbents only care about clearing a re‐election hurdle, signals will tend to cluster just above the threshold needed for re‐election. This generates a skew distribution of signals leading to an incumbency advantage in the probability of election.…
