Fundamental Themes in Social–Emotional Learning
Social-emotional learning (SEL) is a rapidly growing field of research that has garnered significant attention in recent years. Each facet of SEL research in fields such as education, mental health, and developmental research has used specific methodologies and terms in their narrow research focus. In education specifically, where the most SEL research has been produced, many frameworks have implementation requirements. The lack of a framework fo…

Socioeconomic Status and Parent-Child Relationships Predict Metacognitive Questions to Preschoolers
Gender and age effects interact in preschoolers' help-seeking
This study explored preschool age and gender differences in help-seeking within the theoretical framework of scaffolded problem-solving and self-regulation (Bruner, 1986; Rogoff, 1990; Vygotsky, 1978; 1986). The Effects of Preschool Girls’ and Boys’ Help Seeking on Adult Evaluations of Dyadic Problem Solving
Children’s help seeking is ubiquitous in dyadic problem solving and fundamental to theories of scaffolded intellectual development. However, little is known about possible effects of variation in help seeking on adult perceptions. This was investigated by having adults evaluate preschoolers’ ability, achievement expectation, and motivation during a challenging task, unaware that the children were matched in performance, strategy, and language abi…
Collaborative Speech in Dyadic Problem Solving
Preschool gender differences in problem-solving discourse were further investigated. Spontaneous task-related talk of 103 preschool children (53 boys and 50 girls) was analyzed for the frequency of collaborative speech acts to explore a possible link with greater help-eliciting among girls. Girls were nearly exclusive users of collaborative speech. Those who used collaborative speech initiated more verbal turns, used more help-eliciting and self-…
George Jeffreys and the ‘Stile Nuovo’ in English Sacred Music
GEORGE JEFFREYS (c.1610-1685) is a remarkable figure in English seventeenthcentury music. Apart from a few sparsely documented years in Oxford during the Civil War, when he is said to have been organist to the royalist court, he held no official position as a musician.' His sacred music combines a wholehearted commitment to the modern Italianate style with a highly individual approach to harmony and dissonance, and its autograph sources a score, …
