Epistemological role of human reasoning in data-informed decision-making
Visual analytics was introduced in 2004 as a “grand challenge” to build an interdisciplinary “science of analytical reasoning facilitated by interactive visual interfaces”. The goal of visual analytics was to develop ways of interactively visualizing data, information, and computational analysis methods that augment human expertise in analysis and decision-making. In this paper, we examine the role of human reasoning in data analysis and decision…
Collaborative Visual Analytics
Background : Accurate understanding of complex health data is critical in order to deal with wicked health problems and make timely decisions. Wicked problems refer to ill-structured and dynamic problems that combine multidimensional elements, which often preclude the conventional problem solving approach. This pilot study introduces visual analytics (VA) methods to multi-stakeholder decision-making sessions about child injury prevention; Methods…
From Cognitive Amplifiers to Cognitive Prostheses
The most salient ways in which data visualization and interactive techniques have been understood as the material basis of cognition in the emergent field of visual analytics are discussed. Three main dominant understandings have captured the imagination and theorizations of researchers and technicians in this field: data visualizations and interactive techniques as cognitive amplifiers, cognitive prostheses, and cognitive mediators. The analysis…

Patient factors in the implementation of decision aids in general practice
Background Decision aids (DAs) have been developed to help patients make treatment decisions. Research shows that they are effective in increasing patients’ knowledge of treatment options without raising anxiety or conflict. However, they have not been routinely adopted for use in general practice in the UK and there are few reports addressing strategies to introduce them. Objective To examine patients’ views about a variety of DAs for different …
Enhancing Community Capacity to Support Physical Activity
University of British Columbia
The University of British Columbia is the largest university in western Canada, with an enrollment of 35,000 students and offerings of both undergraduate and graduate degrees. An interdisciplinary HCI institute supports HCI teaching and research and is coordinating a proposed interdisciplinary master of science degree in HCI. A new downtown campus will offer a range of educational options in HCI, from executive certificates through master's-level…
Community measures of low-fat milk consumption
OBJECTIVES: This study examined the relationship between the proportion of milk in food stores that is low-fat and consumption of low-fat milk in the community. METHODS: Data were gathered from 503 stores across 53 New York State zip codes. In 19 zip codes, a telephone survey measured household low-fat milk use. Census data were obtained to examine sociodemographic predictors of the percentage of low-fat milk in stores. RESULTS: The proportion of…
Making a place in the metropolis
What accounts for the differences in the kinds of communities within the metropolis in which members of different racial and ethnic groups live? Do socioeconomic advancement and acculturation provide greater integration with whites or access to more desirable locations for minority-group members? Are these effects the same for Asians or Hispanics as for blacks? Does suburbanization offer a step toward greater equality in the housing market, or do…
