Children’s selective trust in technological informants: A meta-analysis.
Pointing-tracing effect in computer-based multimedia learning: A potential explanation from the perspective of text-picture integration
How does gesture mimicry improve children's memory of spatial information?
Do congruent gestures on touchscreens enhance young children's word learning?
BACKGROUND: Touchscreen-based learning environments are increasingly common in early childhood, yet evidence regarding the benefits of interactivity for word learning has been mixed. One possible reason is that not all forms of interaction support learning equally. Understanding how children's touchscreen gestures relate to linguistic content may help clarify when and why interactive learning is effective. AIMS: The present study examined whether…
Instructor's pointing gestures promote learning more than guiding gaze
Adding pedagogical agents who point or trace to children's instructional videos
Unpacking the Role of Embodied Pedagogical Agents in Multimedia Learning: Beyond Attention Guidance
Joint media engagement on touchscreens improves young children’s Chinese character learning in China
Two studies collaboratively investigated the influence of joint media engagement (JME) on preschoolers’ acquisition of Chinese characters through touchscreens. In Study 1, 76 children (32 boys; M±SD = 68.95 ± 4.11 months) were randomly allocated to three groups: touchscreen with JME, touchscreen without JME, and video groups. The findings indicated that JME significantly facilitated children’s learning of Chinese characters via touchscreens. Stud…
Eye Movement Modelling Examples as Cues to Guide Attention and Improve Learning in Short or Long Animations
Does appearance affect children's selective trust in robots' social and emotional testimony
Instructor's direct gaze not body orientation affects learning
How to train students to engage in text‐picture integration for multimedia lessons
This study investigated the effectiveness of visual training or verbal training on how to use a text‐picture processing strategy for learning from computer‐based multimedia instructional material. Sixty‐nine university students were randomly assigned to the verbal training group (students received text‐based instruction for a text‐picture processing strategy), the visual training group (students observed a video depicting an expert's eye fixation…
Prompts affect learning-by-teaching process and learning outcome in multimedia learning
Increasing the realism of on‐screen embodied instructors creates more looking but less learning
BACKGROUND: Although adding embodied instructors on the screen is considered an effective way to improve online multimedia learning, its effectiveness is still controversial. The level of realism of embodied on-screen instructors may be an influencing factor, but it is unclear how it affects multimedia learning. AIMS: We explored whether and how embodied on-screen instructors rendered with different levels of realism in multimedia lessons affect …

Benefits of prompting students to generate summaries during pauses in segmented multimedia lessons
Benefits of asking students to make an instructional video of a multimedia lesson: Clarifying the learning‐by‐teaching hypothesis
Ocular foundations of the spatial contiguity principle: Designing multimedia materials for parafoveal vision
Improving learning-by-teaching without audience interaction as a generative learning activity by minimizing the social presence of the audience
Characters’ realism, not familiarity, improved Chinese children’s learning from video
Characters in educational videos have been shown to help children learn and transfer knowledge. The aim of this study is to explore the influence of realism and familiarity of characters on children’s video learning. The participants were 90 4- to 6-year-olds. The children watched a video in which a character demonstrated how to construct simple gears, and then completed the same task to test the effect of the character’s realism and familiarity …
Fairies in the Box: Children’s Perception and Interaction towards Voice Assistants
In recent years, the growing popularity of smart speakers (e.g., Google Home and Alexa) has facilitated young children’s interaction with internet-based devices and provided them with more opportunities to obtain access to online information. This review summarizes the current state of the research by examining smart speakers’ core characteristics, children’s conceptualization and interaction with smart speakers, and the influences on children’s …

The Impact of Weibo Features on User’s Information Comprehension: The Mediating Role of Cognitive Load
Social media, such as Microblogs, have become an important source for people to obtain information. However, we know little about how this would influence our comprehension over online information. Based on the cognitive load theory, this research explores whether and how two important features of Weibo, which are the feedback function and information fragmentation, would increase cognitive load and may in turn hinder users’ information comprehen…
Watching versus touching: The effectiveness of a touchscreen app to teach children to tell time
Using eye movement modelling examples to guide visual attention and foster cognitive performance: A meta‐analysis
Eye movement modelling examples (EMME) are computer‐based videos displaying the visualized eye gaze behaviour of a domain expert person (model) while carefully executing the learning or problem‐solving task. The role of EMME in promoting cognitive performance (i.e., final scores of learning outcome or problem solving) has been questioned due to the mixed findings from empirical studies. This study tested the effects of EMME on attention guidance …

The use of internet language enhances creative performance
Internet language is a creative product of the rapid development of computer-mediated communication. The present study was to investigate whether the use of Internet language enhances creative problem solving. In Study 1, sixty-two selected participants were equally divided into two groups according to their use experience of Chinese Internet language, and then both more and less experienced groups were asked to complete Chinese remote associates…
