The Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University
Medical Education Program Highlights The Brody School of Medicine (BSOM) fulfills the threefold mission of increasing the supply of primary care physicians serving the state, enhancing the access of minority and disadvantaged students to a medical education, and improving the health status of citizens in eastern North Carolina. Our commitment to service and mission are highly valued by the BSOM community. BSOM is in the top 10% of U.S. medical sc…
The Supervisor-Intern Relationship and Effective Interpersonal Communication Skills
The supervision of student teachers (or interns) is a complex and multifaceted process. One critical activity in this pro cess is that of conferencing between and among the intern, the directing teacher, and the university supervisor. Two as pects of supervisory behavior identified in the literature as essential to successful conferences are: (a) effective interper sonal communication skills, and (b) the implementation of systematic con ferencing…
Effective Intern Conferencing
The authors examine specific proce dures for conducting pre- and postob servation conferences with interns. The Supervision Throughput Model (STM) presented here assumes the use of selected interpersonal communication skills and details specific steps for carry ing out collaborative, goal-oriented con ferences. The idea of a "throughput" is drawn from industry and refers to in ternship programs as a structured expe rience or process that student …

Some Sampling Characteristics of Three Estimators of the Intraclass Correlation
Some sampling characteristics of three estimators of the intraclass correlation were investigated under a variety of conditions within the context of a one-way three treatment level random effects analysis of variance. The results promote caution in the use of all three estimators since they show both a large negative bias under most conditions and a large standard deviation. The three estimators differed very little in their degree of bias or in…
A Four-Dimensional Sphere? a Paradox in AVA's Vector Model and Profile Analysis Method
A mathematical analysis is made of the geometric vector model and profile comparison method developed for the Activity Vector Analysis (AVA), a personality measure widely used in industry. The profile comparison formula is shown to be equal to a Pearson r but less parsimonious than the usual formulas. A contradiction is discovered in that the geometric model is presented in three-dimensional space as a sphere or spheroid, whereas the profile comp…
An Empirical Comparison of Metric and Nonmetric Analyses of Correlation Coefficients
Factor analyses and nonmetric multidimensional scaling analyses were carried out on the same matrices. For error free data, the solutions are identical under choice of a similarity transformation. For real data the solutions were similar with the similarity usually maximal when both solutions had the same number of dimensions. The effect of sample size was looked at using Monte Carlo methods. As sample size increased the sample solutions on the a…
Sampling Characteristics of Kelley's ε and Hays' ω
Statistics used to estimate the population correlation ratio were reviewed and evaluated. The sampling distributions of Kelley's ε 2 and Hays' ω 2 were studied empirically by computer simulation within the context of a three level one-way fixed effects analysis of variance design. These statistics were found to have rather large standard errors when small samples were used. As with other correlation indices, large samples are recommended for accu…
A Comparison of the Classification Accuracy of Profile Similarity Measures
Thirteen profile similarity measures were compared, using generated data. Profiles were generated from sets of three standards by adding random and normally distributed error components to the profile points of the standards. The three standards within each set were vaned systematically, altering the elevation, scatter, and shape similarities between the standards. A correct classification occurred if the generated profile was most similar to the…
