  • Recognition of Student Names Past

    I-Ning Huang•ARTICLE•The Journal of General Psychology•1997•Cited by: 2•References: 1

Recognition of names of former students taught at different times by a middle-aged college professor was tested, to investigate recognition memory over a time span ranging from 6 months to 26.5 years. The relationship between the d', a measure of strength of memory, and the retention interval can be best described by a logarithmic function characterized by a rapid initial drop followed by a slow forgetting rate. The correct responses (hits and re…

  • Effects of Reinforcement Schedules on Rats' Choice Behavior in Extinction

I-Ning Huang, Jeffrey D Krukar et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of General Psychology•1992

The effects of reinforcement schedules on rats' choice behavior in extinction were studied. In a free-operant chamber equipped with two retractable bars, the experimental animals were trained to press the bars separately for a food reward. One bar delivered the reward on a continuous reinforcement (CRF) schedule, and the other delivered the reward on a partial reinforcement (PRF) schedule. Control animals earned the reward from both bars with the…

  • Effects of Ratio Reinforcement Schedules on Choice Behavior

    I-Ning Huang, Jeffrey N Melvin•ARTICLE•The Journal of General Psychology•1990

Choice behavior under a concurrent VR-FR schedule of reinforcement was investigated in two experiments to test a molar theory of maximization. Hunger-motivated albino rats pressed two bars, one on an FR10 and the other on a VR10 schedule, for a food reward. With the total number of experiences with each bar equated and interalternative switching eliminated during training, the study showed that during the choice test, the animals made significant…

  • Transitory Changes of Primacy and Recency in Successive Single-Trial Free Recall

    I-Ning Huang•ARTICLE•The Journal of General Psychology•1986

Transitory changes of primacy and recency in successive single-trial free recall were investigated in three experiments. A trial-by-trial analysis of the serial position curves indicated a pronounced primacy and a moderate recency on the very first recall trial. The primacy reduced and the recency increased rapidly afterward with a concurrent shift in correlation (from positive to negative) between the input and output order of the items recalled…

  • Effects of a Mere-Presence Conspecific on Extinction of an Operant

I-Ning Huang, Guilherme Wood et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of General Psychology•1984

In a 2 × 2 factorial design, 32 hunger-motivated albino rats were trained to press a bar for food in a Skinner box. Animals practiced this operant, with or without a mere-presence conspecific, on a VR reinforcement schedule for 10 days and were extinguished with or without a conspecific in a nearby compartment. The results showed that the presence of a conspecific did not enhance this operant during practice sessions nor its resistance to extinct…

  • Observational Learning of a Bar-Press by Rats

I-Ning Huang, Cheryl A Koski et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of General Psychology•1983•Cited by: 1

In two experiments, the effects of presenting a conspecific on the simultaneous and subsequent acquisition of an operant were investigated. Experiment 1 indicated that albino rats which had a conspecific merely present in a nearby chamber did not learn as quickly as did those which were alone or those which observed a trained model displaying the operant. Experiment 2 indicated that subsequent to observing a model displaying the operant, Long-Eva…

  • The Von Restorff Isolation Effect in Free Recall

I-Ning Huang, Craig Wille•ARTICLE•The Journal of General Psychology•1979•Cited by: 2

The von Restorff isolation effect was examined in free recall with and without the rehearsal frequency controlled. Sixty-four male and female college students viewed several lists of nouns, with or without an isolate, under either oral or silent mode of learning. Written free recalls followed each list presentation. The results showed that (a) isolation did not benefit the recall of a list as a whole; (b) under both modes of learning, the isolate…

  • The Primacy and Recency Effects in Successive Single-Trial Immediate Free Recall

I-Ning Huang, Jerry Tomasini et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of General Psychology•1977•Cited by: 1•References: 2

The present study of 82 male and female college students re-examined the primacy and recency effects in successive single-trial immediate free recall of lists of unrelated English words. With a trial-by-trial analysis of the serial position curve (SPC), it showed the shape of SPC was not invariant. The primacy effect was greater than the recency effect on the very first recall, and the relationship of these two effects immediately reversed and re…

  • Differential Effects of Stimulus And Response Isolation in Paired-Associate Learning

I-Ning Huang, John Fleming et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of General Psychology•1976•References: 2

Using an alternate study-recall procedure, 36 male and female college students learned a list of six paired-associates with either the stimulus or the response of one critical pair isolated (printed in red), or without any isolate to a criterion of one perfect recall. Stimulus members were presented in homogeneous form (printed in black) for all Ss during recall trials to control any possible confounding of stimulus-selection process. The results…

  • The Von Restorff Isolation Effect in Response and Serial Order Learning

I-Ning Huang, Joan Scale et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of General Psychology•1976•Cited by: 1•References: 1

With an alternate study-test procedure, 254 college students attempted either to free-recall or rearrange in order items of an 11-CVC serial list to a criterion of two consecutive perfect trials. Ss learned the list with or without an isolate which was placed on each of the 11 serial positions. The main findings were as follows: (a) While the reconstruction condition required fewer study trials to criterion than the free-recall condition, the iso…

  • Note on Cognitive Dictionary Structure of Adult Chinese and on a Piagetian Semantic Universal

    Open Access•Louis J Moran, I-Ning Huang•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1975

Japanese and North American children under 6 years of age recently were reported to evidence very similar free word-association tendencies which, in turn, were extremely different from those of their own parents. In that study (Moran, 1973), associations to a GG-word list were assigned to one of 4 categories: Iconic, e.g., apple-red, beautiful-flower; Enactive, e.g., apple-eat, rip-pants; Functional, e.g., table-chair, tobacco-pipe; Logical, i.e.…
