The von Restorff isolation effect was examined in free recall with and without the rehearsal frequency controlled. Sixty-four male and female college students viewed several lists of nouns, with or without an isolate, under either oral or silent mode of learning. Written free recalls followed each list presentation. The results showed that (a) isolation did not benefit the recall of a list as a whole; (b) under both modes of learning, the isolate was recalled equally better than its control; and (c) the isolation effect appeared to be greater on the central than on the peripheral positions. A selective attention-encoding assumption has been proposed, as an alternative to the selective attention-rehearsal assumption, to interpret the present findings
