Children's Acquisition of Stimulus Selection Strategies in Paired-Associate Learning
Fifth and sixth grade children were presented CCC trigram: digit pairs (e.g., XZF: 1) for either 2, 4, 6, or 10 paired-asociate (PA) trials. These Ss were observed to have selected the first letters of trigrams after only 2 PA trials. In addition, the relative incidence of single-letter selection (cue selection efficiency) decreased as degree of PA learning increased. The only important grade differences involved the amount of single-letter selec…
Transfer Test Methodology in Investigations of Stimulus Selection in Paired-Associate Learning
An empirical test was made of an earlier argument that the Postman and Greenbloom “double-criterion technique” for measuring stimulus selection leads to an underestimation of single-cue selection when the technique is employed in a within- Ss transfer design situation. The present findings confirmed the earlier argument
Stimulus Encoding in Paired-Associate Learning by Illiterate Children
A picture-redundancy task was introduced for measuring stimulus encoding strategies used by illiterate subjects during redundant-stimulus PA learning. A prototype experiment was executed with black preschool children serving as the illiterate subject population. The results of the prototypic experiment suggested that the young illiterate children employed both two-cue and single-cue processing strategies. It was concluded that the picture-redunda…
Cue Selection Methodology in Paired-Associate Learning
Partial Redundancy and Cue Selection
Normal children learned either “easy” or “hard” paired-associates (PA) with or without partially relevant colored backgrounds. The partially redundant conditons (trigram and partially relevant color-cue) produced far more confusion errors at either level of trigram difficulty. Normal children apparently utilized the colors for response evocation even though such a strategy could not lead to total-list learning
Gastrointestinal Reactions during a Noise Avoidance Task
Recordings of gastrointestinal activity were obtained from 24 pairs of Ss during a rest period and while the experimental Ss performed a noise avoidance task. For the experimental Ss gastrointestinal motility as measured by amplitude showed significant increases during the task. The control Ss, unaware of the task and subjected to the same noises as their partners, showed no increases in gastrointestinal motility. (Author)
