  • Relationships between Locus of Control and Paranormal Beliefs

    Open Access•Robert W Newby, Jessica Boyette Davis•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•2004

The present study investigated the associations between scores on paranormal beliefs, locus of control, and certain psychological processes such as affect and cognitions as measured by the Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count. Analysis yielded significant correlations between scores on Locus of Control and two subscales of Tobacyk's (1988) Revised Paranormal Beliefs Scale, New Age Philosophy and Traditional Paranormal Beliefs. • Single-Item Recognition following Verbal Discrimination Study And/Or Test Trials

    Open Access•Robert W Newby•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1979

This experiment assessed further single-item recognition following verbal discrimination learning by varying the number of study and test trials presented during the initial verbal discrimination task. Two study periods (1 and 2 study trials) and three test periods (0, 1, and 2 trials) were factorially combined to yield six experimental groups. Increasing the test periods increased recognition of the prior words to be verbally discriminated as ol…

  • Effects of the Study-Test or Test-Study Sequence on Transfer from Verbal Discrimination to Paired-Associate Learning

    Robert W Newby•ARTICLE•The Journal of General Psychology•1977

The present study (N = 20 college students) further investigated transfer from verbal discrimination to paired-associate learning using three types of transfer pairings; correct items become stimuli, C-S; correct items become responses, C-R; and new pairings and two paired-associate presentation sequences; Normal, Study followed by Test; and Reversed, Test followed by Study. Based on the frequency theory of verbal discrimination learning, it seem…

  • Translations as Interpair Right and Wrong Items in Double-Function Verbal Discrimination Learning

    Open Access•Robert W Newby•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1976

60 subjects learned one of five verbal discrimination lists, a Spanish single-function, an English single-function, a mixed double-function, a Spanish double-function, or an English double-function. The results indicated superior performance on the single-function lists, intermediate performance with the mixed list, and poor performance on the two double-function lists. The results indicated that translations are of intermediate similarity when u…

  • Effects of Item Color on Verbal Discrimination Learning

    Robert W Newby•ARTICLE•The Journal of General Psychology•1974

Verbal discrimination learning was investigated as a function of the printed color of the items in the list. The subjects received five trials on the same verbal discrimination list and served in one of four experimental groups based on item color: (a) Control, all items printed in black ink; (b) Color Positive, two incorrect items paired with the same correct item if based on item color; (c) Color Control, all items printed in different colors; …
