The student evaluation of teaching and likability
For several decades research into the student evaluation of teaching has periodically found an association between how well students like an instructor and the evaluations. The association has been largely ignored, being seen as an indicator of bias, or as a statistical or procedural artifact. However, these interpretations may be obscuring a more fundamental hypothesis. It is possible that the evaluations, instead of being a measure of ‘good’ or…
Student perception of instructors
Students were asked to rank instructors, who differed by age, gender and political leaning, by their expected helpfulness, and how much a student expected to learn. Students selected older instructors as those from whom they would learn the most, but chose young instructors as the most helpful. Overall, male instructors were preferred over female instructors, especially when emphasis was placed on learning. The political leaning of the instructor…
Student evaluation of teaching and matters of reliability
The student evaluation of teaching process is generally thought to produce reliable results. The consistency is found within class and instructor averages, while a considerable amount of inconsistency exists with individual student responses. This paper reviews these issues along with a detailed examination of common measures of reliability that are utilised with the instruments. While inter-item consistency of the evaluations has been shown to b…
What does ratemyprofessors.com actually rate
This research looks closely at claims that ratemyprofessors.com creates a valid measure of teaching effectiveness because student responses are consistent with a learning model. While some evidence for this contention was found in three datasets taken from the site, the majority of the evidence indicates that the instrument is biassed by a halo effect, and creates what most accurately could be called a ‘likeability’ scale
Student Evaluations of Teaching: Are They Related to What Students Learn?
Although the student evaluation of teaching has been extensively researched, no general consensus has been reached about the validity of the process. One contentious issue has been the relationship between the evaluations and learning. If good instruction increases the amount of learning that takes place, then learning and the evaluations should be validly related to each other. A review of the literature shows that attempts to find such a nomolo…
An Empirical Study of the Influence of Performance and Grades on Students' Evaluation of Instruction
An investigation was made of the effect of returned grades and actual performance on 102 junior and senior students' evaluation of one instructor's instruction viewed once indicated no significant relationships. Implications were discussed

The Differential Perceptions of Male and Female Deviants
Hepburn (1975) stated that the definition of the audience determines whether deviance exists so that societal reaction can take place. However, the audience has not received systematic attention in the literature of the sociology of deviance. The existing literature examines mostly the reactions of official social control agents. Consequently, the purpose of this research is to determine the stereotypes held by a group besides social control agen…
Redheads and Blonds
In a study involving 100 college subjects, blonds had a very positive stereotype. Blond females were seen as beautiful, pleasant, and extremely feminine. Blond males were seen as strong, active, pleasant, successful, and good-looking. Redheaded females were seen as unattractive, but as competent and professional. Redheaded males had a surprisingly negative stereotype. They were seen as very unattractive, less successful, and rather effeminate. Ha…
Impact of Stress and Locus of Control on the Concept of Self
This research examined the effects of stress and locus of control upon the concept of self. Rotter's I-E Scale, Holmes and Rahe's Stress Scale, and a Lawson's Modified Semantic Differential Self-concept Scale were administered to 659 blue collar workers. Analysis indicated that internal subjects with low stress had a higher mean self-concept and were more satisfied with their relationships with spouses than subjects who were externally oriented a…
