  • Die inkerende waarneming

    Open Access•Heilna Du Plooy•ARTICLE•Tydskrif vir letterkunde•2017

In this article the relation between Breyten Breytenbach’s paintings and poems is discussed focusing on images relating to vision, seeing, looking and eyes. Based on the interpretation of selected paintings, of which some are used on the covers of the volumes of poetry and a number of poems, the conclusion is reached that the same poetics and ars combinatoria underlie painting and writing in Breytenbach’s oeuvre. Seeing, writing and living are op…

  • Between Past and Future

    Open Access•Heilna Du Plooy•ARTICLE•Journal of Literary Studies•2014

This article is concerned with time and temporality in human experience as well as in narrative representation. The focus is directed at the representation of thresholds, threshold experiences, borders and boundaries in narrative texts, but where these concepts are more often than not analysed from a spatial perspective, the temporality of these forms of liminality is foregrounded here. Using Ricoeur's views on time, temporality, historicality an…

  • Oopte en afbakening

    Open Access•Heilna Du Plooy•ARTICLE•Journal of Literary Studies•2000

In this reading of the novels of Lettie Viljoen, spatiality is used as a point of departure. The relation between spatiality and temporality in the novels is discussed and the specific use of spatial aspects in the novels indicated. The article argues that these texts, particularly Landskap met vroue en slang (1996), foreground metaphysical concerns and that spatio‐temporal relations play an important role in emphasising these matters. The Heideg…

  • Die kreatiewe gebruik van die narratologie in die literatuuronderrig

    Open Access•Heilna Du Plooy•ARTICLE•Journal of Literary Studies•1991

In this article an attempt is made to illustrate the creative possibilities of basic narratological concepts. Narratology is generally regarded as a rather rigid approach to narrative texts because of the structuralist base of the discipline. On account of the fact that narratology does describe the most important narrative categories adequately, the point is made that the discipline is very useful in teaching a reading strategy for narrative tex…

  • Teks en ideologie

    Open Access•Heilna Du Plooy•ARTICLE•Journal of Literary Studies•1990

Ideology plays an important role in literature and literary studies. In this article the concept of ideology is delimited by looking for corresponding aspects in different definitions. The interconnectedness of language, literature, society and ideology is indicated. In an effort to talk about ideology in literature without relinquishing either literature or literary theory, the contributions of different theoretical approaches to the study of id…

  • Literatuur uit die lewe

His theory of basic language structures that develop from submerged and collective mental processes active in all societies and the manifestation of these structures in more complex structures, the simple forms (Einfache Formen), is analysed and discussed. The legend as a simple form is discussed at length and the other simple forms are merely mentioned. Simi…
