Les démons étaient-ils vraiment le problème à Corinthe
A consensus of opinion exists among scholars that Paul appears to contradict himself in 1 Cor 10:17–22: on the one hand, he makes clear that idols have no existence beyond the material objects themselves ; on the other hand, he appears to warn the Corinthians that they are exposing themselves to a dangerous metaphysical reality, namely demons (i.e., evil supernatural beings), by taking part in pagan cults. This supposed non sequitur is generally …
Demonology and Terminology in Jubilees
This paper examines the terminology related to demons in Jubilees. It argues that important nuances have been lost in the process of translation. Specifically, it argues that the original Hebrew of Jubilees always used רוחות to refer to demons. It reexamines cases in which the Ethiopic and/or Latin translations would appear to contradict this conclusion (i.e., Jub. 7:27; 10:1–2) in light of textual evidence from the Book of Asaf, the Byzantine ch…
The Evil Inclination in Early Judaism and Christianity
One of the central concepts in rabbinic Judaism is the notion of the Evil Inclination, which appears to be related to similar concepts in ancient Christianity and the wider late antique world. The precise origins and understanding of the idea, however, are unknown. This volume traces the development of this concept historically in Judaism and assesses its impact on emerging Christian thought concerning the origins of sin. The chapters, which cove…

An Evil Inclination in the Early Targums to the Pentateuch and Prophets?
The Targums are translations of the Hebrew Bible that combine into one seamless text straightforward translation and exegetical embellishments. In this chapter I will examine those texts in the Targums to the Law and the Prophets (according to the traditional division of the Hebrew canon) that discuss a yeṣer and which belong to a stratum of the Targum that is likely to be early, by which I mean that their substantive forms are likely to have the…

« Arrière de moi, Satan ! Tu m'es en scandale ! » (Mt 16.23). Analyse de l'ajout du rédacteur dans son contexte juif
Jesus rebukes Peter at Caesarea Philippi by calling him ‘Satan’. The redactor of Matthew adds to this: ‘You are a stumbling block for me!’ This article argues that this editorial addition reflects a tendency in Jewish sources (1) to use the image of ‘stumbling’ to talk of sin, and (2) to identify the diabolic figure (e.g. Satan, Belial, Evil Inclination) as the cause of ‘stumbling’, earning it the title ‘stumbling block’. This tendency has its or…
Adam, Satan, and the King of Tyre
The oracle against the King of Tyre, found in Ezekiel 28.12-19, is a difficult text that inspired diverse interpretations in Late Antiquity. For example, according to one rabbinic tradition the text spoke of the first man, Adam, while the Church Fathers found in the same text a description of the fall of Satan. This book studies the rabbinic sources, patristic literature, the Targum, and the ancient translations, and seeks to understand the reaso…
