Stability of Two Piagetian Scales with Severely and Profoundly Retarded Children
Corman and Escalona's scales for Object Permanence and Spatial Relationships were administered to 98 severely and profoundly retarded children on three occasions, with intervals of six months between successive administrations. Correlations between the scores on the three administrations ranged from .76 to .87, and the mean change was less than one point on each of the scales. These findings demonstrate the high stability of the scales when envir…
Attitudinal versus ecological approaches to the characterization of institutional treatment environments
The relational and discriminative properties of attitudinal and ecological measures of environments were examined within the context of a state hospital for mentally retarted clients. Three hypotheses were advanced, and the results gave substantial support for one of these and partial support for a second: (a) that the correlations between attitudinal and ecological measures should not differ significantly from zero, and (b) that differences amon…
Characteristics of the Treatment Environment
Intercorrelations among the 72 items of the CTE—Characteristics of the Treatment Environment—were factored for three samples of attendants at institutions for the mentally retarded. The results differed from those of previous factor analytic studies of the CTE, which also conflicted with one another. A two-factor oblique solution was finally accepted, and the items were grouped into scales corresponding to the two factors, which were identified a…
Measuring Differences in Residential Environments among Institutions for Retarded Persons
Two questionnaires, administered to selected treatment staff of institutions for retarded persons, discriminated not only among living units within these facilities but among the facilities themselves, were only minimally related to the staffs' background characteristics, and were relatively stable over time. Consequently these instruments show promise for determining the differential effects of various residential or treatment environments upon …
Comparison of the residential environment of a state hospital for retarded clients with those of various types of community facilities
Two questionnaires, Characteristics of the Treatment Environment (CTE) and the Residential Management Survey (RMS), were administered on two occasions to the staffs of various types of community residential facilities serving retarded persons. The results were consistent with those of previous studies of public institutions, i.e., the responses of staff to the questionnaires were only minimally related to their demographic characteristics and emp…
Structure of Ordinal Scales of Psychological Development in Infancy
Intercorrelations among Uzgiris and Hunt's scales for 2 samples of infants were subjected to cluster analysis and factor analysis. The results of these procedures were similar for both samples, 3 clusters from the first analysis resembling 3 factors from the second. The findings were also consistent with Uzgiris and Hunt's observations on the structure of the scales
