Loneliness in Schizophrenia
BACKGROUND: Loneliness is a pervasive concern for people with schizophrenia and is associated with deleterious effects on health outcomes. However, its underlying mechanisms remain insufficiently understood. AIMS: The current study examined the roles of perceptions of mattering to others and asocial beliefs in contributing to loneliness among people with schizophrenia compared to those without a history of serious mental illness (NC). METHODS: = …
Within-Person Fluctuations in Momentary Loneliness Among People With Schizophrenia
BACKGROUND: Loneliness is highly prevalent among individuals with schizophrenia and contributes to poor functional and clinical outcomes. However, most research to date has relied on trait-based assessments, providing limited insight into the dynamic nature of loneliness experiences. AIMS: The current study employed ecological momentary assessment (EMA) to examine momentary loneliness and its variability in people with schizophrenia relative to a…

Physical and Mental Health Characteristics of 2,962 Adults With Subjective Cognitive Complaints
We investigated subjective cognitive complaints (SCCs), as well as physical and mental health factors, in adults and older adults. U.S. residents ( N = 2,962) were recruited via the Amazon Mechanical Turk platform and completed a 90-item survey. Overall, 493/1930 (25.5%) of younger adults and 278/1032 (26.9%) of older adults endorsed SCCs. Analyses revealed worse physical and mental health characteristics in the SCC+ compared to the SCC- group, w…
Stakeholders’ Perspectives regarding Participation in Neuromodulation-Based Dementia Intervention Research
This study evaluated stakeholders' perspectives regarding participation in two hypothetical neuromodulation trials focused on individuals with Alzheimer's disease and related disorders (ADRDs). Stakeholders (i.e., individuals at risk for ADRDs [ n = 56], individuals with experience as a caregiver for someone with a cognitive disorder [ n = 60], and comparison respondents [ n = 124]) were recruited via MTurk. Primary outcomes were willingness to e…
When Does Therapeutic Misconception Affect Surrogates' or Subjects' Decision Making about Whether to Participate in Dementia Research
Therapeutic misconception" (TM) refers to inappropriate assumptions and beliefs on the part of research participants regarding key distinctions between the purpose, methods, intended benefits, and potential disadvantages of research compared to those of clinical care. Despite an extensive literature describing TM across varied types of research and populations, minimal work has addressed TM in the context of dementia research. This is a serious g…
Association Between Older Age and More Successful Aging
OBJECTIVE: There is growing public health interest in understanding and promoting successful aging. While there has been some exciting empirical work on objective measures of physical health, relatively little published research combines physical, cognitive, and psychological assessments in large, randomly selected, community-based samples to assess self-rated successful aging. METHOD: In the Successful AGing Evaluation (SAGE) study, the authors …
Social desirability does not confound reports of wellbeing or of socio-demographic attributes by older women
This study assesses the relationship of social desirability response bias with self-reported physical, mental and cognitive health, successful ageing, and socio-demographic attributes among 1,860 older women at the University of California, San Diego's Clinical Center for the Women's Health Initiative and the Sam and Rose Stein Institute for Research on Aging. The women were aged between 57 and 91 years and lived in the San Diego community. Measu…
A New Brief Instrument for Assessing Decisional Capacity for Clinical Research
CONTEXT: There is a critical need for practical measures for screening and documenting decisional capacity in people participating in different types of clinical research. However, there are few reliable and validated brief tools that could be used routinely to evaluate individuals' capacity to consent to a research protocol. OBJECTIVE: To describe the development, testing, and proposed use of a new practical instrument to assess decision-making …
