Comparison of Two College Entrance Examination Tasks
Comparison of Two College Entrance Examination Tasks
115 high school juniors were required to write a composition after reading an essay or just to write one without reading. Students were instructed in writing a summary, a synthesis, and an argument to prepare them to write a composition for the task which required reading an essay. Writing samples were collected before the study started and after instructions for each kind of writing, i.e., a summary, a synthesis, and an argument. When the first …
An analysis of persuasive discourse
The purpose of this study was twofold: (a) to determine the effects of instruction on students’ persuasive writing at two grade levels (3rd and 5th), and (b) to determine the categories and types of written persuasion used by students at four grade levels (3rd, 5th, 10th, and 12th). The first objective, determining instructional effects, was accomplished by specifically instructing students in oral and written argument/persuasion. There were no s…
Development of a Writing Attitude Survey for Grades 9 to 12
In this study was developed an instrument for reliably and quickly assessing senior high school students' attitudes toward writing, primarily through modifying an instrument developed for Grades 4 to 8, and for examining the effects of gender, grade, and ethnicity on these students' attitudes toward writing. A 19-item survey instrument was administered to 870 students. There was no significant main effect for ethnicity, but effects for gender (gi…
Effects of Ethnicity in Attitudes toward Writing
The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of ethnicity (as culture) on attitudes toward writing of students in Grades 4 to 8. A 19-item survey was administered to 1798 students in Grades 4 to 8 in ten schools in three school districts. There was no significant effect of ethnicity on the Total score, but there were significant main effects for grade and for gender and a significant interaction only for ethnicity by grade. Follow-up of si…

Development and Application of a Writing Attitude Survey for Grades 1 to 3
The purpose of these studies was to develop and use a writing attitude survey for students in Grades 1 to 3 modeled after the survey developed and used with students in Grades 4 to 8 in 1991. A 19-item survey was administered to 394 children in Grades 1, 2, and 3. The instrument was then used in an experiment to assess the effect of instructional treatment, grade, and participation on 112 students' attitudes toward writing. There were no signific…
Development and Use of a Writing Attitude Survey in Grades 4 to 8
The purpose of these studies was to develop and use a writing attitude survey for students in Grades 4 to 8. The instruments designed for use with older students are inappropriate for younger ones because they are long, complex, and take longer to complete. A 19-item survey for Grades 4 to 8 was constructed, based on responses of 398 students. The instrument was then used in an experiment to assess the effect of instructional treatment, grade, an…
