Does the physical food environment in secondary school influence students’ social norm perceptions regarding healthy dietary choices? – An exploratory study in the Netherlands
Creating a healthy food environment in secondary schools has the potential to communicate social norms regarding healthy dietary choices. This study explored the relationship between the schools' food environment and perceived descriptive (what others do) and injunctive (what others approve) norms regarding healthy dietary choices among adolescents. An exploratory (quasi-experimental) study was conducted in 23 Dutch schools, differing between thr…
Charge Your Brainzzz
Inadequate sleep among Dutch adolescents is a complex public health issue with detrimental effects on physical and mental well-being. Previous interventions have shown limited or no lasting effects. While systems approaches help to understand and address such challenges, effective prevention efforts require theory- and evidence-based intervention design using behavior change techniques. This study outlines the systematic development of a ‘whole s…
A qualitative study into the perceptions and needs of fathers with a migration background on parenting regarding energy balance-related behaviors
A deeper understanding of the needs, perceptions, and experiences of migrant populations concerning parenting regarding the promotion of healthy energy balance-related behaviors among their children can lead to better-tailored health promotion programs that prioritize cultural and linguistic inclusivity
Do financial constraint and perceived stress modify the effects of food tax schemes on food purchases
Objective: To investigate whether financial constraint and perceived stress modify the effects of food-related taxes on the healthiness of food purchases. Design: Moderation analyses were conducted with data from a trial where participants were randomly exposed to: a control condition with regular food prices, an sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) tax condition with a two-tiered levy on the sugar content in SSB (5–8 g/100 ml: €0·21 per l and ≥ 8 g/10…
Increasing community capacity to improve the implementation of Health Promoting Schools
Building community capacity is important for the successful implementation of a Health Promoting School. To identify how capacity building can be encouraged in secondary schools, four schools engaged in the Fit Lifestyle at School and at Home (FLASH) intervention for 3 years. This study explores barriers and facilitators that school personnel, parents and pupils experienced in the capacity-building process. Thirty-one stakeholders were interviewe…
Letting people flourish
Background: The concept of "positive health" emerged from the need for a holistic and more dynamic perspective on health, emphasising the ability of individuals to adapt and self-manage. The positive health conversation tool helps understand how people score on six positive health dimensions. However, skills within these dimensions to maintain or improve health have not yet been described. This is important for enabling individuals to put health …
Understanding the system dynamics of obesity-related behaviours in 10- to 14-year-old adolescents in Amsterdam from a multi-actor perspective
Introduction and Methods: To develop an understanding of the dynamics driving obesity-related behaviours in adolescents, we conducted systems-based analysis on a causal loop diagram (CLD) created from a multi-actor perspective, including academic researchers, adolescents and local stakeholders. Results: The CLD contained 121 factors and 31 feedback loops. We identified six subsystems with their goals: (1) interaction between adolescents and the f…
Building community capacity to stimulate physical activity and dietary behavior in Dutch secondary schools
Background: Building community capacity in secondary schools is a promising strategy for the sustainable implementation of school-based health promotion. The Fit Lifestyle at School and at Home (FLASH) intervention explored how building community capacity works for the prevention of overweight following four strategies: leadership, participatory school culture, tailored health-promotion activities, and local networks. This study evaluates the int…
Supporting schools during the implementation of the health-promoting school approach
Introduction: The health-promoting school (HPS) approach was developed by the World Health Organization to create health promotion changes in the whole school system. Implementing the approach can be challenging for schools because schools are dynamic organizations with each a unique context. Many countries worldwide have a health promotion system in place in which healthy school (HS) advisors support schools in the process of implementing the HP…
Stakeholders’ Perceptions Regarding Adaptation and Implementation of Existing Individual and Environmental Workplace Health Promotion Interventions in Blue-Collar Work Settings
Blue-collar workers often have disadvantageous health statuses and might therefore benefit from a combination of individual and environmental workplace health promotion interventions. Exploring stakeholders' perceived facilitators and barriers regarding the combined implementation of these interventions in blue-collar work settings is important for effective implementation. A qualitative study consisting of 20 stakeholder interviews within six ty…
Perceptions of employees with a low and medium level of education towards workplace health promotion programmes
Employees with a medium level of education were more inclined to be interested in a WHPP than those with a low level of education. Focus groups suggested preferences varied depending on job type and related tasks. Recommendations are to allow WHPP design to adapt to this variation and facilitate flexible participation. Future research investigating employers' perceptions of WHPPs is needed to enable a mutual understanding of an effective programm…

Involving Children in Creating a Healthy Environment in Low Socioeconomic Position (SEP) Neighborhoods in The Netherlands
To ensure that health behavior interventions for children living in low socioeconomic position (SEP) neighborhoods are in line with children's wishes and needs, participation of the children in the development, implementation, and evaluation is crucial. In this paper, we show how children living in three low-SEP neighborhoods in the Netherlands can be involved in Participatory Action Research (PAR) by using the photovoice method, and what influen…
Food and health promotion literacy among employees with a low and medium level of education in the Netherlands
This study suggests there is room for improvement in SPFL and HPL among adults with a low and medium level of education. Future research should consider comparing low and middle socioeconomic with high socioeconomic groups when exploring food and health literacy. Regarding health promotion activities for adults with a low and medium level of education, it is recommended to focus on improving both food and health literacy. Furthermore, more resear…
Public acceptability of a sugar-sweetened beverage tax and its associated factors in the Netherlands
Objective: To investigate the level of public acceptability of a sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) tax and its associated factors. Design: Participants completed an online self-administered questionnaire. Acceptability of an SSB tax was measured on a seven-point Likert scale ( strongly disagree to strongly agree ). Associations between acceptability and sociodemographic factors, weight status, SSB consumption and beliefs about effectiveness (e.g., ‘…

Agreement between parent and child report of physical activity, sedentary and dietary behaviours in 9-12-year-old children and associations with children’s weight status
There can be considerable disagreement between the health related behaviours of children as reported by parents or the children themselves. Based on the present study, it cannot be concluded whether parents' or children's reports are more accurate. For future studies, social desirability and recall bias would be best demonstrated in a validation study comparing child and parent self-reports with more objective measures of physical activity and fo…
Tools for a systematic appraisal of integrated community-based approaches to prevent childhood obesity
Large variability between integrated community-wide approaches preventing childhood obesity in the European region was identified and therefore each of them has different needs. Both tools used in combination seem to facilitate comprehensive assessment of integrated community-wide approaches in a systematic manner, which is rarely conducted. Nonetheless, the tools should be improved in line to their limitations as recommended in this manuscript
Parental physical activity is associated with objectively measured physical activity in young children in a sex-specific manner
Higher PA in mothers, for instance in leisure activities, is related to higher PA in daughters, and more active fathers are related to more active sons. To support PA in young children, interventions could focus on the PA of the parent of the same sex as the child. Special attention may be needed for families where the parents have sedentary jobs, as children from these families seem to adopt more sedentary behaviour
Development of the ‘Canteen Scan’
The Canteen Scan provides insight into the extent to which canteens meet the Dutch Guidelines for Healthier Canteens. It also provides tailored feedback to support adjustments towards a healthier canteen and with the scan changes over time can be monitored. Pilot tests show this tool to be usable in practice

Method: We asked those children (males and females aged between 10 and 15 years) 'what we mean by Mediterranean diet?'. Then we proposed a scenario: 'you are the director of a film stage in which a family, mother and father with their sons are eating at home; they live in fifties at the seaside and the father is a fisherman; now you put them around the table of their kitchen and write what we have to put in to realize this scene; if possible, exp…
Impaired parent-reported health-related quality of life of underweight and obese children at elementary school entry
Underweight and overweight children experience impaired health-related quality of life on the physical functioning domain. Physicians, teachers and parents should be aware of the possible negative impact on health-related quality of life in underweight and overweight 5-6-year-old children
Influence of Maternal and Child Lifestyle-Related Characteristics on the Socioeconomic Inequality in Overweight and Obesity among 5-year-old Children; The “Be Active, Eat Right” Study
It is unclear whether the socioeconomic inequality in prevalence of overweight and obesity is already present among very young children. This study investigates the association between overweight and socioeconomic status (SES, with maternal educational level as an indicator of SES) among 5-year-old children. This cross-sectional study uses baseline data from 5-year-olds of Dutch ethnicity (n = 5,582) and their mothers collected for the "Be active…
Dutch teachers and parents about overweight prevention in pre-vocational schools
Healthier lifestyles may contribute to prevent overweight in adolescents. Although school-based interventions show promising results, adoption and implementation by secondary schools and involvement of parents is difficult. Our study aims to gain a better understanding of the problem awareness and beliefs of school staff and parents regarding adolescents' overweight and energy balance-related behaviour, their motivation for health-promoting activ…

Within-group changes varied widely, whereas monitoring of interventions and process evaluation are crucial to understand the observed results
Identifying developmental trajectories of body mass index in childhood using latent class growth (mixture) modelling
Our results indicate the importance of healthy lifestyle behaviors at a young age, and indicate that maternal BMI is a very important risk factor for the development of childhood overweight. Comprehension of heterogeneity in the development of BMI and associations with modifiable health related behaviors is interesting for prevention by targeting high risk behaviors in early childhood, especially in low SES children, children of non-western ethni…
Water Consumption in European Children
Background : High intake of fruit juices and soft drinks contributes to excessive weight gain and obesity in children. Furthermore, parenting practices play an important role in the development of children's dietary habits. The way parents play this role in the development of their children's choices of beverages is still unclear. Objectives : To study the associations: (1) of both fruit juices and soft drinks consumption with water consumption o…
Cross-sectional associations between maternal parenting styles, physical activity and screen sedentary time in children
No association was found between parenting styles and PA. However, an authoritative parenting style was associated with a reduction in SST and a neglectful parenting style with an increase in SST, especially in boys and in children whose mother had a medium education level. Future studies of parenting practices are needed to gain more insight into the role of parents in children's PA and SST levels, as a basis for the development of interventions…
