Seeing oneself written into British and European history
Born in Sheffield in the 1980s, in a dual-heritage working-class family, Johny Pitts came to fame in 2019 with the publication of Afropean: Notes on Black Europe. His black and white photographs illustrated “the under-documented areas of Europe that often contradict the homogenized monocultured depictions suggested by tourist boards and pocket-sized travel guides”. Pitts’ intention to focus on the “beauty in black banality” departed from what he …
Museum
In August 2020 Hans Sloane (1660–1753) was symbolically ‘pushed off the pedestal’ (to quote the then director of the British Museum Hartwig Fischer) when a bust of the museum’s founding father was removed from the main hall, near the entrance, to ‘a secure cabinet alongside artefacts explaining his work in the context of the British Empire’ (PA Media). The decision to remove the statue was made partly in response to the Black Lives Matter movemen…
Smangaliso Ngwenya and Sbusiso Shozi
Created in 2017, Cion: Requiem of Ravel’s Bolero premiered in France at the Festival de Marseille’s 2019 edition, which it opened on June 14. It was South African choreographer Gregory Maqoma’s third time at the Festival, where he came in 2011 with Southern Bound Comfort (co-created with Belgian choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui), and again in 2013 with Kudu (co-created with French musician Erik Truffaz). Cion is a choreographed adaption of the …

Hlengiwe Lushaba
Not Another Diva... was presented in the 2019 edition of The Festival de Marseille, a city well-known to the show’s co-creator, Congolese choreographer Faustin Linyekula. He came to Marseille in 2016 to perform a dance solo at the Mucem (Hamida et les brouillards), and came back to the Festival in 2021, with both a performance (Banataba, the choreographed journey of a Iengola statue from the New York Metropolitan Museum back to the Congolese vill…
Brett Bailey
Brett Bailey is probably one of the most celebrated contemporary South African theatre artists, as well as one of the most controversial, as the heated European reception of EXHIBIT B in 2012-14 strikingly showed. The visual artist and director is an habitué of the Festival de Marseille, where he came in 2014 to present MACBETH; Jan Goossens’s arrival in 2016 led to close and regular collaboration. For the Festival’s 2017 edition, Bailey’s tablea…

From Reverse Ethnography to Cultural Performance
Cuban-American performance artist Coco Fusco uses the phrase “reverse ethnography” in her essay “The Other History of Intercultural Performance” to describe what she did in 1993 when she exhibited herself and her co-performer Guillermo Gomez-Peña in the United States and in Europe as caged newly discovered Amerindians. Using the codes of colonial shows, she pretended to be the colonial exhibit, while the true exhibits were the viewers and their (…

In January 1977, Lagos, Nigeria, was hosting the Second World Black and African Festival of Arts and Culture (FESTAC). It was a grander version of the first World Festival of Black Arts (FESMAN), held in Dakar, Senegal, in 1966, and gathered fifteen thousand participants coming from more than seventy countries, including the North African delegations absent from the Senegalese event. The aims of the festival were “to revive and promote Black and …
Epistemologías de la Modernidad
In the context of the Eurocentric theories of modernity, the following article addresses four relevant topics and its corresponding deconstruction.1) Hegel's concept of modernity as the discovery of subjectivity in Western Europe.2) Max Weber's concept of modernity by emphasizing his criticism of protestant ethic as the engine of capitalism.3)Jürgen Habermas's conception of modernity as 'unfinished project', emphasizing the theoretical structure …
Complejidades emergentes
