  • Experiences of childhood emotional maltreatment and emotional intelligence in young men

Open Access•Thomas Suslow, Michael Rufer et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2026

In men, experiences of emotional neglect during childhood but not of other maltreatment types seem to be associated with a diminished ability to manage one's emotions in adulthood. The present findings support the idea of a strategic emotional intelligence vulnerability following emotional neglect

  • Eye-tracking evidence of an association between social anxiety and avoidance of threatening faces in healthy women

Open Access•Hanna Dietel, Taavi Wenk et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2026

Socially anxious individuals are characterized by higher social fears and a sensitivity to signals of rejection. Eye-tracking studies in socially anxious participants without clinical diagnoses provided mixed findings on altered attentional processes. Investigations of gaze behavior in response to socially threatening scenes are scarce. By using eye-tracking technology in a free-viewing task, the present study examined in 108 healthy women the re…

  • A look at the free-viewing paradigm in eye-tracking research to assess positive attentional bias

Open Access•Thomas Suslow, Dennis Hoepfel et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2025

Attention orientation toward positive stimuli may have mood-protective or mood-enhancing effects. Eye-tracking is an increasingly administered method to assess biased attention allocation and maintenance. In the present paper, we point to an underestimated but reliable method of eye-tracking research for measuring positive attentional bias and its temporal dynamics: the free-viewing paradigm. To date, few free-viewing eye-tracking studies have sp…

  • Experiences of childhood emotional maltreatment and emotional intelligence in young women

Open Access•Thomas Suslow, Anette Kersting et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2025

Experiences of emotional neglect during childhood but not of other types of maltreatment seem to go along with a decreased ability to understand and verbalize emotional states in adulthood. Thus, early emotional neglect could have an impact on strategic emotional abilities. Emotional neglect may have a greater effect on the development and expression of emotional intelligence than emotional abuse

  • Association between patients’ word use and symptom reduction in an internet-based cognitive behavioral intervention for prolonged grief symptoms

Open Access•Vanina Schmidt, Julia Treml et al.•ARTICLE•Current Psychology•2024

Bereaved by suicide face unique challenges and have differences in their language compared to bereaved by other causes of death, however their language during therapy has not been studied yet. This study investigates the association between patients’ language and reduction in prolonged grief symptoms in an internet-based intervention for people bereaved by suicide. Data stems from a randomized controlled trial including 47 people completing self-…

  • Deployment of attention to facial expressions varies as a function of emotional quality—but not in alexithymic individuals

Open Access•Chiara Surber, Dennis Hoepfel et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2024

Our results show evidence of attentional biases for positive and fearful social information in non-alexithymic individuals, but not in alexithymic individuals. The lack of spontaneous attentional preference for these social stimuli in alexithymia might contribute to a vulnerability for developing emotional disorders. Our data also suggest that briefly presented emotion words may not facilitate gaze orientation toward emotion-congruent stimuli

  • Prolonged grief disorder in ICD-11 and DSM-5-TR

Open Access•Julia Treml, Katja Linde et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2024

The results demonstrate that the prevalence of PGD significantly varies depending on the application of the diagnostic algorithm and criteria. PGD affects a substantial proportion of the general population and should be addressed by healthcare providers. However, applying the minimum ICD-11 criteria could lead overestimating the prevalence. Therefore, further harmonizing the ICD-11 and DSM-5-TR criteria and diagnostic algorithm for PGD seems appr…

  • Psychometric properties of the German version of the Pre-loss Grief Questionnaire (PG-12-R)

Open Access•Vanina Schmidt, Julia Treml et al.•ARTICLE•Death Studies•2024

This study aimed to develop a German version of the revised Pre-loss Grief Questionnaire (PG-12-R) and examine its factor structure, reliability and validity. The PG-12-R was assessed in a representative German sample ( N = 2,515). Of these, 362 (14.4%) reported to have a loved one suffering from an incurable disease and 352 provided full data sets. Principal component factor analysis, scree-plot and parallel analysis were conducted. Results supp…

  • Interpersonal problems and recognition of facial emotions in healthy individuals

Open Access•Thomas Suslow, Alexander Lemster et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2023

Poor identification of other people's facial signals of anger and disgust might be a factor contributing to interpersonal problems with social dominance and intrusiveness. Anger expressions signal goal obstruction and proneness to engage in conflict whereas facial disgust indicates a request to increase social distance. The interpersonal problem dimension of communion appears not to be linked to the ability to recognize emotions from facial expre…

  • Coping With Anxiety

Open Access•Vivien Günther, Salome Jahn et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2022

Our findings indicate that dispositional strategies to deal with anxiety-provoking situations are related to volumetric alterations in the thalamus, a brain structure that has been implicated in the mediation of attentional processes and alertness, and the anticipation of harm. The dispositional tendency to monitor the environment for potential threats (i.e., vigilance), appears to be associated with volumetric increases in the thalamus, whereas …

  • Prevalence, Factor Structure and Correlates of DSM-5-TR Criteria for Prolonged Grief Disorder

    Open Access•Julia Treml, E Brähler et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2022

Although the prevalence of 3.4% using the new diagnostic criteria is lower than the prevalence previously suggested by a meta-analysis, PGD remains a substantial disorder in the general population. In particular, the loss of a partner or child increases the risk for PGD, as does unpreparedness for the death of a loved one. Clinicians should pay particular attention to these high-risk groups. Further clinical implications are discussed

  • The Relationship Between Pre-Loss Grief, Preparedness and Psychological Health Outcomes in Relatives of People With Cancer

Open Access•Vanina Schmidt, Julia Kaiser et al.•ARTICLE•OMEGA - Journal of Death and Dying•2022

The aim of this study was to examine the simultaneous effects of pre-loss grief, preparedness for death and preparedness for caregiving on different psychological health outcomes in relatives of people with cancer. Two hundred ninety-nine relatives of people with cancer participated in a cross-sectional online survey. Participants were included if they spoke German and were 18 years or older. Multivariate regression analysis was conducted. Pre-lo…

  • Alexithymia Is Associated With Deficits in Visual Search for Emotional Faces in Clinical Depression

Open Access•Thomas Suslow, Vivien Günther et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2021

Background: The concept of alexithymia is characterized by difficulties identifying and describing one's emotions. Alexithymic individuals are impaired in the recognition of others' emotional facial expressions. Alexithymia is quite common in patients suffering from major depressive disorder. The face-in-the-crowd task is a visual search paradigm that assesses processing of multiple facial emotions. In the present eye-tracking study, the relation…

  • Mental Health Self-Stigma of Syrian Refugees With Posttraumatic Stress Symptoms

Open Access•Jonathan Bär, Alexander Pabst et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2021

Background: The high prevalence of mental disorders related to posttraumatic stress among Syrian refugees is often in contrast with their low utilization of mental health care in the host countries. Mental health self-stigma, i.e., internalized stigma of having a mental disorder, could prevent individuals from seeking mental health care. Therefore, we aimed to provide evidence on different aspects of mental health self-stigmatization among adult …

  • Feasibility of Present-Centered Therapy for Prolonged Grief Disorder

Open Access•Anna Vogel, Hannah Comteße et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2021

Present-centered therapy (PCT) was originally developed as a strong comparator for the non-specific effects of psychotherapy in the treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder. PCT qualifies as a not strictly supportive treatment as it is structured and homework is assigned between sessions. It does not focus on cognitive restructuring or exposure. A growing body of literature supports its beneficial effects. For example, it demonstrated only slig…

  • Health Care Services Utilization and Health-Related Quality of Life of Syrian Refugees with Post-Traumatic Stress Symptoms in Germany (the Sanadak Trial)

Open Access•Thomas Grochtdreis, Susanne Rohr et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

Refugees who have fled from the ongoing civil war in Syria that arrived in Germany often develop post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS). The aim of this study was to determine health care services utilization (HCSU), health care costs and health-related quality of life (HrQoL) of Syrian refugees with mild to moderate PTSS without current treatment in Germany. The study was based on the baseline sample of a randomized controlled trial of a self-hel…

  • Traumatized Syrian Refugees with Ambiguous Loss

Open Access•Anna Renner, David Jäckle et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

Refugees from war zones often have missing significant others. A loss without confirmation is described as an ambiguous loss. This physical absence with simultaneous mental persistence can be accompanied by economic, social or legal problems, boundary ambiguity (i.e., uncertainty about who belongs to the family system), and can have a negative impact on mental health. The aim of this study was to identify sociodemographic and loss-related predict…

Therefore, the self-help app "Sanadak" was developed to target post-traumatic stress in Syrian refugees. We aimed to inspect the recruitment and baseline characteristics of the participants in the trial, which is conducted to evaluate the app. Analyses were based on the recruitment sample ( n = 170) and the trial sample ( n = 133…

  • How Is the Presence of Company Related to Thwarted Belongingness in Real Time? Taking a Closer Look at the Conceptualization of the Construct of the Interpersonal Theory of Suicide

Open Access•Nina Hallensleben, Heide Glaesmer et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

    (1) Background: The role of thwarted belongingness (TB) in predicting suicidal ideation, as originally assumed by the Interpersonal Theory of Suicide, is repeatedly challenged by empirical findings. This could be due to an inadequate conceptualization of the construct of TB that is assumed to be influenced by intrapersonal and interpersonal factors. (2) Methods: We examined the associations of TB with intrapersonal variables related to depression…

  • Loss and grief in elderly people

Julia Treml, Katja Linde et al.•ARTICLE•Death Studies•2020•References: 3

We evaluated 2,865 elderly people to investigate the prevalence of prolonged grief disorder (PGD), examine predictors and mental health correlates. The conditional prevalence of PGD varied between 0.8% and 5.2% (diagnostic algorithm vs. cut-off). PG-13 scores were related to depressive symptoms, sleep disturbances, reduced life satisfaction, and quality of life. Predictors were female gender, less time since death, more losses, having lost a chil…

  • Effects of Briefly Presented Masked Emotional Facial Expressions on Gaze Behavior

Open Access•Charlott Maria Bodenschatz, Anette Kersting et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•2018

Orientation of gaze toward specific regions of the face such as the eyes or the mouth helps to correctly identify the underlying emotion. The present eye-tracking study investigates whether facial features diagnostic of specific emotional facial expressions are processed preferentially, even when presented outside of subjective awareness. Eye movements of 73 healthy individuals were recorded while completing an affective priming task. Primes (pic…

  • Alexithymia and Incidental Learning of Emotional Words

Open Access•Thomas Suslow, Anette Kersting et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•2003

Alexithymia is thought to reflect a deficit in the cognitive capacity to process emotions. Prior research suggests that emotional valence has a memory enhancing effect in poor conceptual learning conditions. This study addressed the question of whether incidental learning of emotional words is a function of alexithymic tendencies. Incidental learning is unintentional learning that results from other activities. The 20-item Toronto Alexithymia Sca…

Open Access•Anette Kersting, Birgit Wagner•ARTICLE•Dialogues in Clinical Neuroscience•2012

The loss of an infant through stillbirth, miscarriage, or neonatal death is recognized as a traumatic life event. Predictors of development of complicated grief after prenatal loss include lack of social support, pre-existing relationship difficulties, or absence of surviving children, as well as ambivalent attitudes or heightened perception of the reality of the pregnancy. Risk of complicated grief was found to be especially high after terminati…

Open Access•Natascha-Alexandra Weinberger, Anette Kersting et al.•ARTICLE•Obesity Facts•2016

Background: Body dissatisfaction has been identified as a psychological correlate of obesity that is related to disordered eating, poor self-esteem, and depression. However, not all individuals with obesity are equally vulnerable to these correlates, and ‘normative discontent' is present in individuals with normal weight, too. In this light, the complex relationship of body image and individual weight status seems like a worthwhile direction of r…
