Reflecting on the Russian Aggression against Ukraine and the Russo-Ukrainian War
This is an introductory essay to the special issue of "Peace Review" on the Russian aggression against Ukraine and the Russo-Ukrainian war. When we put out the call for submissions for this issue, we hoped that we would be completing the finishing touches in the final days of the war. Instead, as we read and reread the articles, we were painfully aware of the fact that the war continued and more conflict had broken out across our globe. In this e…
Teaching Peace in Times of War: Perspectives from a Ukrainian University
How do you teach about peacebuilding and build the skills necessary to do the work during active war? This article shares an interview, conducted October 9, 2023, with two university professors from the Department of Sociology and Social Work (DSSW) at L'viv Polytechnic National University (LPNU). Asked to focus on their own experiences in the interview, the scholars reflect on what it has been like to try to teach not only the theories, but also…

Intimate partner abuse (IPA) is a societal issue that continues to devastate individuals, families, and communities worldwide. Historical and current attempts to identify and eradicate IPA provide clues about what is working and what is not. Reflecting on written sources and more than 30 years of professional social service work, the author surveys the major causal theories of IPA and the continued devastating impact of IPA on women, men, and chi…
Feminist Social Work Education in Mainstream and Nonmainstream Classrooms
Women's courses continue to face questions about their contribution to the social work curriculum and their relevance for mainstream and nonmainstream students. The study described in this article compared the effects of feminist social work education in three classes of predominately white students with those in one class of native Canadian and immigrant students. In all the classes, the students' feminist identification increased, practice appr…
