The Relationships Between Mexican American Acculturation, Cultural Values, Gender, and Help‐Seeking Intentions
This study examined the relationships between Mexican acculturation, cultural values, gender, and help‐seeking intentions among Mexican American community college students. Findings suggest that as Mexican Americans lose their culture of origin and increase their generational status, their attitudes toward help seeking become less favorable. This contradicts cultural barrier theory as an explanation for underuse of mental health services by Mexic…

Successful and Unsuccessful Multicultural Supervisory Behaviors: A Delphi Poll
Using the Delphi method, university counseling center supervisors with significant experience in multicultural supervision generated and ranked elements of successful and unsuccessful multicultural supervision. Twenty-seven of 35 successful elements and 24 of 33 unsuccessful elements involved cultural considerations. Multicultural supervision was defined as a supervisory situation in which the individuals in the supervisory dyad differed in their…
Ethnic Group Preferences for Multicultural Counseling Competencies
Asian American (n = 155), European American (n = 200), and Hispanic (n = 152) undergraduate students were surveyed using a paired-comparison format to determine preferences for the 9 attitudes/beliefs, 11 knowledges, and 11 skills identified by D. W. Sue, P. Arredondo, and R. J. McDavis (1992) as characteristics of the competent multicultural counselor. The Bradley-Terry-Luce model, which uses a weighted least square regression to place the compe…
A Multicultural Perspective on Principles of Empirically Supported Interventions
The authors evaluate the Principles of Empirically Supported Interventions (PESI) that have been recommended by Wampold, Lichtenberg, and Waehler for how well the principles promote attention to cultural issues. Their review suggests that the PESI could indicate the need to consider cultural issues when evaluating intervention research, but the authors have reservations about how well incorporation of cultural considerations will actually occur i…
Design and development of the European American values scale for Asian Americans
Design and development of the European American values scale for Asian Americans
Existing instruments for measuring Asian American acculturation emphasize behavior acculturation to the exclusion of value acculturation. Most are based on the assumption that acquisition of European American behavior occurs simultaneously with the loss of Asian behavior. With the advent of the Asian Values Scale (AVS; B.S.K. Kim, D.R. Atkinson, & P.H. Yang, 1999), it is now possible to assess adherence to Asian cultural values. This article desc…
Asian Cultural Values and the Counseling Process: Current Knowledge and Directions for Future Research
Based on values common to most Asian cultures, a set of propositions on the relationship between Asian cultural values and the counseling process is presented in the context of a current theory of acculturation/enculturation. Recommendations for future research relating Asian cultural values to the counseling process are offered in an attempt to stimulate more empirical attention in this area
Cultural value similarities and differences among Asian American ethnic groups
Using data on 570 Chinese, Filipino, Korean, and Japanese American college students from 3 previous studies (1 published [B. S. K. Kim, D. R. Atkinson, & P. H. Yang, 1999] and 2 unpublished [B. S. K. Kim, 1999; E. C. Wong, B. S. K. Kim, N. W. S. Zane, I. J. Kim, & J. S. Huang, 1999]), the authors subjected 22 items constituting 6 value dimensions of the Asian Values Scale (AVS; B. S. K. Kim et al., 1999) to the following structural equation model…

Ethnic Parity Goals are Not Race-Based Quotas
The Asian Values Scale: Development, factor analysis, validation, and reliability
Multicultural researchers and theorists have noted that client adherence to culture-of-origin values plays an important role in the provision of culturally relevant and sensitive psychological services. However, lack of instruments that measure ethnic cultural values has been a shortcoming in past research that attempted to examine this relationship. In this article, the development of the Asian Values Scale (AVS) is described, and the results of…
Reconceptualizing Multicultural Counseling: Universal Healing Conditions in a Culturally Specific Context
Some tension appears to exist in the literature between the emic, or culturally specific, and etic, or universal, approaches to counseling with culturally different clients. Prompted by the lack of clear theoretical models for multicultural counseling, as well as by the inability of specific factors to explain treatment effectiveness in general, we suggest that consideration of the common factors found in psychotherapy and healing across cultures…

Achieving Ethnic Parity in Counseling Psychology
With the increasing diversification of the population comes an increased need for ethnic minority psychologists. Most counseling psychology programs will have to dramatically increase the numbers of ethnic minority students they enroll and faculty they hire to achieve parity and meet the need for more ethnic minority counseling psychologists in the future. This article describes the preconditions and strategies needed to recruit, to select, and t…

Multicultural Training: A Call for Standards
White Racial Identity Models: A Critique and Alternative Proposal
Existing models of White racial identity development (WRID) are challenged as being deficient in terms of: (a) being based on the oppression-adaptive models of minority identity development, (b) focusing primarily on attitudes toward racial/ethnic out-groups, not on White identity attitudes; and (c) depicting the process as developmental in nature. An alternative conceptualization, based on the construct of White racial consciousness, is presente…
Mexican American and European American Ratings of Four Alcoholism Treatment Programs
Mexican American and European American community college students were surveyed to determine the models of addiction to which they subscribed, their ratings of four alcoholism treatment programs, and, in the case of Mexican Americans, their scores on a measure of acculturation. Mexican American participants rated all four alcoholism treatment programs as more effective than did European Americans. Models of addiction to which participants subscri…
Ethnic Minority Psychologists: Whom They Mentor and Benefits They Derive From the Process
Ethnic minority psychologists were found to be prolific mentors of both ethnic minority and European American protégés. Mentoring benefits were not related to ethnic similarity
A Three-Dimensional Model for Counseling Racial/Ethnic Minorities
The counseling profession' heavy reliance on the psychotherapy role has been criticized as being unresponsive to the needs and experiences of ethnic-minority clients. The use of other counseling roles and techniques indigenous to the client's ancestral culture have been proposed as alternatives to psychotherapy; however, no schema currently exists to help counselors select an appropriate helping role or strategy. This article describes one schema…

Excavations in the Middle Ward Mont Orgueil, Gorey, Jersey
The few diggings on a small scale which have been made during the past twenty years have sufficed, nevertheless, to establish the fact that the promontory upon which the Castle stands has had its human inhabitants, off and on, ever since mid-Palaeolithic times and that in the soil which partly clothes it, evidences of their presence lay or lie.N. A Hoard of Samian Ware from Pompeii
During a visit to Naples in June, 1913, I was permitted by the courtesy of Professor Spinazzola, the distinguished Director of the National Museum, to examine a number of decorated bowls of Samian ware obviously of south Gallic style, preserved in the ‘magazzini’ of the museum. Professor Spinazzola most kindly afforded me every facility for their study, and consented to their publication. Seventy-six of these bowls bore, in addition to the invent…
The Governors of Britain from Claudius to Diocletian
A list of the governors of Britain has been published by Hübner in the Rheinisches Museum , vol. 12 (1857), and information about many of them is to be found in Liebenam, Die Legaten in den römischen Provinzen and Untersuchungen zur Verwaltungsgeschichte der römischen Kaiserzeit , in the Prosopographia Imperii Romani , and in Sagot, La Bretagne romaine . Many also are dealt with under their own names in Pauly-Wissowa, Real-Encyclopädie ; but ther…

Three Caistor Pottery Kilns
When in the spring of 1929 the Norfolk and Norwich Archaeological Society was about to begin excavations on the site of Venta Icenorum (Caistor-next-Norwich) Sir George Macdonald prophesied, in an article in The Observer , that among the results of the work would be a useful increase in our knowledge of the Roman pottery of the East Anglian area. It is not inappropriate, therefore, that an account of three pottery kilns found at Caistor in 1930 a…
The Origin and Date of the ‘Sator’ Word-Square
The recent extensive article on this subject by the distinguished French Scholar Dr. Jérome Carcopino provides an opportunity to return to a subject which I have already discussed in a paper published shortly before the War. Since its publication fresh evidence has come to light which may be thought to bear upon the subject, and various explanations of the origin of the square have been put forward which seem to invite comment. The exhaustive art…

The Mexican American in Higher Education: An Example of Subtle Stereotyping
This article focuses on four major weaknesses that are prevalent in behavioral science articles on Mexican Americans: (a) overgeneralization from a small subgroup to the total Mexican‐American population; (b) misuse and misinterpretation of data; (c) adherence to a culture‐blame syndrome; and (d) inappropriate treatment suggestions. In order to facilitate discussion, examples are drawn from an article published recently in the Personnel and Guida…
The Categorization of Ethnic Stereotypes by University Counselors
The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of cognitive organizational factors on stereotyping. Using a free-sort task, it was found that university counselors tend to form constellations of stereotypes that correspond to specific ethnic groups. Although there was a tendency not to differentiate Anglo and Asian American stereotypes, Chicano stereotypes were well differentiated from the other two groups. Implications for research and …
Selection and Training for Human Rights Counseling
Human rights counseling is needed today as much as or more than it was in the 1960s.
