Foreign competition and export diversification: Evidence from domestic firms in China
This study investigates the effects of foreign firms on the product diversification of domestic exporters in China. The result shows that domestic exporters react to the competition of foreign firms by reducing their product diversification. Firms drop the marginal products and concentrate on core products, and they distribute their exports more evenly among the product varieties they retained. Mechanism tests suggest that the competition of fore…
Temperament and early childhood cognitive development among China’s middle class: Direct effects and the moderation of parenting styles
Cognitive development in early childhood is fundamental to lifelong development. However, research on temperament’s role, a crucial factor connecting individual biology and sociability, is limited in early childhood cognitive development. Using data from the “Survey on the Development of Children Aged 3–6” conducted by Tsinghua University in 2022, we found that among children from middle class families, higher levels of persistence and sensitivit…
Improving physical and mental health in women with breast cancer undergoing anthracycline-based chemotherapy through wearable device-based aerobic exercise: A randomized controlled trial
Purpose Aimed to assess the impact of wearable device-based aerobic exercise on the physical and mental well-being of women with breast cancer (BC) undergoing chemotherapy. Methods Forty adult women with BC who underwent anthracycline-based chemotherapy were randomly allocated to the exercise group ( n = 21) or the control group ( n = 19). Both groups received standard health education and oncology care. In addition, the exercise group wore weara…
Effect of foreign direct investment on firms' pollution intensity: Evidence from a natural experiment in China
This paper examines a causal relationship between foreign direct investment (FDI) and firms' pollution intensity by exploiting the policy of China's FDI access relaxation in 2002. The result shows that FDI leads to a significant reduction in firms' pollution intensity. The mechanism tests find that FDI reduces pollution intensity by increasing firms' productivity, pollution management abilities, and the output of lightly polluting firms. The effe…
Substantive or symbolic ? The strategic choice of sustainable environmental strategy for enterprises induced by the new environmental protection law
The new “Environmental Protection Law” (abbreviated as NEPL) holds milestone significance for the construction of China's ecological legal system. However, evidence regarding the impact of NEPL on sustainable environmental strategy (abbreviated as SES) still lacks empirical analysis. This study aims to examine the mechanisms and boundary conditions through which the NEPL influences SES. Utilizing a difference‐in‐differences approach, an empirical…
Is there a correlation between sensory impairments and social isolation in middle-aged and older Chinese population? Cross-sectional and longitudinal evidence from a nationally representative survey
Purpose The aim of this study is to investigate the cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between sensory impairments (SIs) including single vision impairment (SVI), single hearing impairment (SHI), and dual sensory impairments (DSI) with social isolation in the middle-aged and older Chinese population. Methods Data were obtained from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Survey (CHARLS). In total, 11,674 Chinese older adults aged …
Spillover Effects of Foreign Direct Investment on Export Sophistication: Evidence from Chinese Domestic Manufacturing Firms
The rapid growth of China’s export sophistication and the driving factors are a matter of discussion in the literature. This study constructs a new measurement for net sophistication by utilizing the world input-output database and excluding the technologies embodied in foreign inputs. We find that although China’s net sophistication has been increasing, it is much lower than that of developed countries. Based on new measurements, we explore the …
A study on the factor market distortion and the carbon emission scale effect of two-way FDI
An efficient hybrid differential evolutionary algorithm for zbilevel optimisation problems
Bilevel problems are widely used to describe the decision problems with hierarchical upper–lower-level structures in many economic fields. The bilevel optimisation problem (BLOP) is intrinsically NP-hard when its objectives and constraints are complex and the decision variables are large in scale at both levels. An efficient hybrid differential evolutionary algorithm for BLOP (HDEAB) is proposed where the optimal lower level value function mappin…
The role of energy mix and financial development in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions’ reduction: Evidence from ten leading CO2 emitting countries
Estimation of salt intake by 24-hour urinary sodium excretion: A cross-sectional study in Yantai, China
Dietary salt intake in Yantai adults was high. Reducing the intake of table salt and soy sauce used in cooking will be an important strategy to reduce sodium intake among Yantai adults
The impact of persistent visually disabling vitreous floaters on health status utility values
