Gig Expectations: Literacy Practices, Events, and Texts in the Gig Economy
This article explores the writing and reading requirements of the literacy practices, events, and texts characteristic of work mediated by the online labor platforms of the gig economy, such as Airtasker and Freelancer, which bring together people needing a job done with those willing to do it. These emerging platform-based discourse communities and their associated literacies are a new domain of social activity. Based on an examination of seven …
Literacy and the workplace revolution: A social view of literate work practices in Industry 4.0
The Fourth Industrial Revolution is widely acknowledged as a digital technological revolution building on the convergence of Robotics, the Internet of Things, and the Internet of Services. What is less often acknowledged is that it is also a revolution in the social practice of work. Literacy is a core social technology of work and it is changing as rapidly and radically as the digital technologies that are reshaping work, workers and working. Th…
Peopling’ curriculum policy production: Researching educational governance through institutional ethnography and Bourdieuian field analysis
This paper explores the methodological basis for empirically researching moments of major policy change. Its genesis is in the methodological challenges presented by the initial stages of an ongoing research project examining the current attempts to establish the first nation-wide Australian curriculum. We draw on Dorothy Smith's development of institutional ethnography and Bourdieuian field analysis to outline a methodological framework for rese…
Labouring in the knowledge fields: Researching knowledge in globalising workspaces
While research on globalisation can hardly be said to have ignored the phenomenon of the global corporation or the globally distributed supply chain, the focus has overwhelmingly been on 'globalization from above'on corporate structures and on the movement of global capital in global 'knowledge economies'. My focus in this paper is on the challenge of researching what Appadurai calls 'globalization from below': on researching the knowledge-buildi…
Points of Vulnerability and Presence: Knowing and learning in globally networked communities
This is a paper about knowledge, learning and the idea of community in what we call “hybrid workspaces”. Hybrid workspaces “bring together physical place and cyber place” in communication networks (Castells, 2001, p. 131). Many people work in various kinds of hybrid workspaces. A person working on a production line might have real-time co-workers in their own town, just as a colleague might work in a hybrid workspace and rely upon others who comm…
Telling tales out of school: Women and literacy in ‘New Times’
Our focus in this paper is on women and literacy in times of rapid and radical change in public, community and working life. Using narrative as a framework, we look at three research stories. The first focuses on women engaging in, and silenced by, the literacies of a restructuring workplace. The second focuses on the stories women, aged 70 to 85, tell in writing workshops where they counter stereotypes of ageing. The third focuses on literacies …
A case study of discursive practices and assessment processes in a multi-ethnic context
