The Introjected and the Intrinsic in Psychology and Christianity
The psychoanalytic description of introjection, e.g., in the development of the superego, emphasizes the “swallowed whole,” unassimilated, split-off quality of the introject. Psychology is seen to have introjects, e.g., from 19th century physics; Christianity, either in individual or institutionalized form, is likewise seen to often have this split-off quality. In contrast, the “intrinsic religious orientation” (Allport) is correlated with self-a…
Self-Actualization and Sanctification
The theoloical concept of sanctification is discussed from the reformed and Wesleyan perspective and equated with the psychological concept of self-actualization. Both concepts attempt to describe a long term growth process in the individual whereby certain characteristics become increasingly prominent. Christ is set forth as the outstanding example of a self-actualizing person and a study of sanctification in the history of Christianity will une…
Adequacy of Socialization as an Interpretation of the Social Desirability Response Set
An interpretation of the social desirability response set as measuring, in part, the adequacy of socialization was supported in that the social desirability ratings of the 26 Ss with low scores on the Edwards Social Desirability Scale tended to be more varied than those of 26 Ss with high scores. It was suggested that this factor may be significant in the interpretation of individual personality test scores, that cross-fertilization between clini…
Test-Retest Reliability and the Significance of Doubtful Responses in the Edwards Personality Inventory
On the basis of correlations between test-retest scores of 45 university students over a nine-week period, the test-retest reliability of scales in Book IA of the EPI was judged satisfactory. Inclusion of doubtful answers in the scale score did not alter the reliability or validity of the scale. The significance of these findings to users of the EPI and to those constructing objective personality tests was discussed
Personality Structure of Adolescents as Measured by the Edwards Personality Inventory
The object of the study was to administer the Edwards Personality Inventory to high school students for the purpose of enlarging empirical data on the personality structure of adolescents and to provide normative data for future use of the EPI. 274 students from the junior classes of 2 Seattle, Washington high schools were administered the EPI. Means and standard deviations for each scale were computed separately for males and females and compari…
Note on the Social-Desirability Response Set in Singer's Daydreaming Questionnaire
Means of the social desirability ratings of items in Singer's Daydreaming Questionnaire correlated .41 with the mean response to those items. It was suggested that this moderate rather than high correlation may be due to the attenuated distribution of responses to items of the questionnaire and/or to the lack of agreement regarding the social acceptability of daydreams
