On the (Mis)Use of Machine Learning With Panel Data
We provide the first systematic assessment of data leakage issues in the use of machine learning on panel data. Our organising framework clarifies why neglecting the cross‐sectional and longitudinal structure of these data leads to hard‐to‐detect data leakage, inflated out‐of‐sample performance, and an inadvertent overestimation of the real‐world usefulness and applicability of machine learning models. We then offer empirical guidelines for pract…
Do voters use information on candidates? Experimental evidence from a recent election
Through a survey experiment during the 2021 municipal elections of Rome, Italy, we evaluate the effects of a policy on political transparency that requires the online publication of information on candidates before the election. We find no effects on turnout and choice of councilors. However, treated subjects who invested more time browsing candidates’ profiles voted more for the incumbent mayor. These effects align with the limited engagement of…
Quality of Life and Populist Radical Right Attitudes
Fitting into the literature on the geography of the populist radical right (PRR), we investigate how places’ quality of life (QOL) correlates with PRR attitudes and voting behaviour in Italy. We built a dataset by merging the QOL measure from the 24 ORE Group with the 2022 ITANES (Italian National Election Studies) survey. Using this merged dataset, our multilevel regression models reveal that (1) both lower and declining QOL are substantively as…
Sports nationalism and xenophobia
International football matches are among the highest manifestations of national pride and unity that a country can have in peaceful times. However, some anecdotal evidence suggests that when things go wrong (e.g. when the national team loses), the euphoria surrounding these events can easily turn into xenophobic outbursts. We propose a conceptual framework and an empirical analysis to explain whether sports nationalism can fuel xenophobic behavio…
Typical emotional expression in children’s drawings of the human face
This study was aimed at verifying if children introduce emotional expressions in their drawings of human faces, and if a preferential expression exists; we also wanted to verify if children’s pictorial choices change with increasing age. To this end we examined the human figure drawings made by 160 boys and 160 girls, equally divided in 4 age groups: 6–7; 8–9; 10–11; 12–13 years; mean ages (SD in parentheses) were: 83,30 (6,54); 106,14 (7,16) 130…
Longitudinal effects of family and school context on the development on emergent literacy skills in preschoolers
The negative influence of economic and socio-cultural disadvantages on students’ literacy performance has been widely documented. However, the ability of schooling to counterbalance the predictive effect exerted by inequality in the family context has been less investigated. This study aims to longitudinally investigate the relative weight of the child’s family context, i.e., parents’ occupation and education levels; home literacy; and the school…
Sezioni Elettorali Italiane (SEI)
Obtaining geocoded electoral results at precinct level can be challenging in many countries. In this study, we present two validated methodologies developed to overcome these difficulties, and we build new geocoded electoral results for several Italian cities. Our dataset covers the last 20 years (1999-2022) and includes data for various types of elections, including national, regional, municipal and referendum. We provide an overview of some not…
The urban roots of populism
The impact of local contexts on populist voting patterns is receiving more attention, after being initially underestimated in the research literature. Populist support tends to be concentrated in areas ‘left behind’ or ‘that don’t matter’, but we still lack an accurate understanding of (1) the locations of these places within major cities and (2) what characteristics of urban contexts prompt the populist vote. We aim to bridge this gap by analysi…
Multidimensional profiles of learning orientations and school achievement
A person-oriented approach was applied to the study of early adolescents’ learning orientations to identify different profiles and their association with school achievement. A total of 244 middle-school students (male: 128; female: 116; M- age ± SD = 12.51 ± .93) completed a self-report questionnaire to explore cognitive, metacognitive, and affective dimensions of learning orientations. School achievements were collected in a range of school subj…
The impact of a music education program on meta-musical awareness, logical-mathematical, and notational skills in preschoolers
A number of studies suggest a link between musical training and both specific and general cognitive abilities, but despite some positive results, there is disagreement about which abilities are improved. This study aims to investigate the effects of a music education program both on a domain-specific competence (meta-musical awareness), and on general domain competences, that is, cognitive abilities (logical-mathematical) and symbolic-linguistic …
The mediating role of emotions in the relation between beliefs and teachers' job satisfaction
This study investigates the patterns of relations between beliefs, emotions, and job satisfaction in 249 Italian in-service teachers. Participants were assessed on their growth and fixed mindsets, self-efficacy beliefs, emotions associated with various components of their professional engagement and job satisfaction. Mediational analyses shed light on the mediating role of teaching and role emotions in the relation between beliefs and job satisfa…
The association between school-level SES and emergent literacy in Italy ( La relación entre el nivel socioeconómico a nivel de centro escolar y la alfabetización emergente en Italia )
The aim of this study was to investigate the association between mixed-SES kindergartens and emergent literacy in Italian children. The independent contributions of parents’ occupational (SES-PO) and educational level (SES-PE) on emergent literacy were separately analysed. Three emergent literacy skills were assessed in 189 children twice, at the beginning and the end of the last year of kindergarten. Firstly, repeated-measures MANCOVA has shown …
Drawing places, recreating spaces
Drawing is a highly participatory mode of communication, particularly suited to allowing children to express their knowledge and ideas about various aspects of reality. It is necessary to ascertain whether children are able to master drawing sufficiently to place it at the service of their representational intentions, and whether they possess the pictorial flexibility needed to articulate and differentiate their graphic representations. The prese…
The predictive role of prior achievements and conceptions of learning in university success
This study focused on the transition from upper-secondary school to university. Specifically, it examined whether prior academic achievements and conceptions of learning at the time of completion of upper-secondary school predicted short- and long-term university success (grades at the bachelor’s and master’s levels). A total of 171 psychology students (Mage = 23.99) participated in this retrospective longitudinal study. At the end of upper-secon…

Upper secondary school students’ conceptions of learning, learning strategies, and academic achievement
The relations between more surface- or deep-level learning approaches and academic achievement were investigated. Gender, level of study, and type of schools were moderating variables. 170 upper-secondary school students’ conceptions of learning and their chosen learning strategies were explored via two self-report questionnaires. Furthermore, their academic achievement in a range of subject areas was collected. A Confirmatory Factorial Analysis …

Promoting narrative competence in kindergarten
Is two better than one? Comparing children’s narrative competence in an individual versus joint storytelling task
Predicting Reading, Spelling, and Mathematical Skills
This two-year longitudinal study contributes to the debate between the school readiness and emergent literacy approaches, individuating early markers for reading, spelling, and mathematical skills. Two hundred and two Italian children participated in this study (M age = 5.6years, SD = 0.3). In kindergarten, a wide range of children's domain-general and domain-specific skills were assessed through standardized tests. In primary school, children's …

Development in narrative competences from oral to written stories in five- to seven-year-old children
The relationship between oral and written narratives
BackgroundThe relationship between oral language and the writing process at early acquisition stages and the ways the former can enhance or limit the latter has not been researched extensively.AimsThe predictive relationship between kindergarten oral narrative competence and the first- and second-grade written narrative competence was explored in a 3-year longitudinal study. Among the first and second graders, the relationship between orthographi…
Theory of mind and language of mind in narratives
Narrative competence can be considered an indicator of children’s knowledge about other people’s minds. The present study investigates the relations between, on the one hand, children’s narrative competence and their second order language of mind (comprehension of deception) and, on the other, their developmental trends from kindergarten to primary school. Participants in the study included 142 Italian-speaking children (63 attending their last y…

Phonological devices in poems by English and Italian children
Poems were elicited from 133 English children between two and six and 171 Italian children between three and seven, using a similar technique, and the results were compared. Both groups produced large numbers of poems. There were great similarities and some differences. The majority of poems in both samples contained phonological devices (mostly rhyme and alliteration) and the proportion was higher (87%) in the Italian sample than in the English …
