  • Quantitative Assessment of Human Health Risks Associated with Heavy Metal and Bacterial Pollution in Groundwater from Mankweng in Limpopo Province, South Africa

Open Access•Tsolanku Sidney Maliehe, Nelisiwe Mavingo et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2024

Heavy metal and microbial pollution in groundwater raises health concerns due to its adverse effects. This study aimed to assess the health risks associated with heavy metal and bacterial pollution in groundwater in Mankweng. Heavy metals and Escherichia coli were detected using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrophotometry and a Colilert system, respectively. The heavy metal pollution index (HPI) and non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks w…

  • Determination of the Quality of Groundwater in Mankweng, Limpopo Province, South Africa, Using the Water Quality Index

Open Access•Tsolanku Sidney Maliehe, Nelisiwe Mavingo et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2024

There is a lack of groundwater quality monitoring, especially in developing countries like South Africa. This study aimed to evaluate borehole water quality. Groundwater was analysed for pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), temperature, electrical conductivity (EC), total dissolved solids (TDSs), turbidity, chemical oxygen demand (COD), nitrogen (N), sulphate (SO 4 2- ), fluoride (F - ), chloride (Cl - ), calcium (Ca 2+ ), magnesium (Mg 2+ ), potassium (K …

  • Isolation and Optimisation of Culture Conditions for a Marine Bioflocculant-Producing Bacterium and Application of Its Bioflocculant in Wastewater Treatment

Open Access•Tlou Nelson Selepe, Tsolanku Sidney Maliehe et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

The application of bioflocculants has become an alternative to that of chemical flocculants in wastewater treatment due to their environmental friendliness and non-toxic effects. This study aimed at isolating a bioflocculant-producing bacterium from marine water, optimisation of its culture conditions, and investigation of the removal efficiency of its bioflocculant on pollutants in wastewater. The bacterium was identified by 16S rRNA gene analys…

  • Antioxidant and antibacterial properties of Ziziphus mucronata and Ricinus communis leaves extracts

Open Access•V Nemudzivhadi, Peter Masoko•ARTICLE•African Journal of Traditional…•2015

Background: Plants have always been a successful source of remedy from nature. With the widespread use of medicinal plants by indigenous people, the search for biologically active agents is relevant as these plants have the potential to provide pharmacologically active compounds. This study aimed for investigating the effect of antioxidant and antibacterial properties of Ziziphus mucronata Willd (Rhamnaceae) and Ricinus communis L. (Euphorbiaceae…

  • In vitro immune-modulatory potential of crude extract of leaf of Albizia gummifera against stimulated peripheral blood mononuclear and raw cells

Open Access•Makgatho, SA Mashele et al.•ARTICLE•African Journal of Traditional…•2015

Background: Albizia species including A. gummifera have been used in folk medicine for the treatment of various conditions by many cultural groups. Apart from its anti-parasitic and antimicrobial activity associated with its use, Albizia gummifera have not been investigated for either its anti-inflammatory properties or anti-proliferative effect in vitro.Materials and Methods: Extracted acetone crude extract of plant material was tested for the p…

  • Antimycobacterial evaluation of fifteen medicinal plants in South Africa

    Open Access•T Mmushi, T J Mmushi et al.•ARTICLE•African Journal of Traditional…•2010

Fifteen plant species were collected from the Nelspruit Botanical Garden based on a list of plants provided by Phytomedicine Programme at the University of Pretoria and their ethnopharmacological information. Hexane, dichloromethane (DCM), acetone and methanolic extracts were screened for antimycobacterial activity against Mycobacterium smegmatis. The acetone extract of Milletia stulhimannii was the most active, showing activity against Mycobacte…

  • Evaluation of the antioxidant, antibacterial, and antiproliferative activities of the acetone extract of the roots of Senna italica (fabaceae)

Open Access•Peter Masoko, Sechene Stanley Gololo et al.•ARTICLE•African Journal of Traditional…•2010

Senna italica, a member of the Fabaceae family (subfamily Caesalpinaceae), is widely used traditionally to treat a number of disease conditions, such as sexually transmitted diseases and some forms of intestinal complications. The roots of Senna italica were collected from Zebediela subregion, Limpopo province (S.A), powdered and extracted with acetone by cold/shaking extraction method. The phytochemical composition of the extract was determined …

  • Antibacterial activity of extracts of three croton species collected in Mpumalanga region in South Africa

    Open Access•S C Selowa, L J Shai et al.•ARTICLE•African Journal of Traditional…•2010

The antibacterial activities of three Croton species were compared using bioautography and the serial microdilution methods. The methanolic extracts of all the species had low activity against Escherichia coli. The highest activity was observed with Croton megalobotrys against Enterococcus faecalis with a minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) value of 0.02 mg/ml. Croton steenkapianus extracts were the least active of the species investigated, on…

  • Screening Of Twenty-Four South African Combretum And Six Terminalia Species (Combretaceae) For Antioxidant Activities

    Open Access•Peter Masoko, J N Eloff et al.•ARTICLE•African Journal of Traditional…•2008

The dried leaves of Combretum and Terminalia species (Combretaceae) were extracted with acetone, hexane, dichloromethane and methanol. Thin layer chromatography (TLC) plates were developed under saturated conditions and sprayed with 0.2% 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH) in methanol for antioxidant screening. Visualization of separated bands exhibiting antioxidant activities enabled the localization and the subsequent identification of the po…
