Becoming in the style of a/r/tography: A c/a/rtography of sorts
This paper begins by asking what does becoming mean in a/r/tography? Meandering through different possibilities that a/r/tography invites, the paper becomes an opportunity for two scholars to think with the concept, how it travels, and different ways of being with it that enable us to write together. In doing so we acknowledge the importance of experimental and emergent approaches to research in art education. The authors fold in rich meanings fr…

Relational Ethics Through the Flesh: Considerations for an Anti-Colonial Future in Art Education
In this article, we reflect on our teaching practices that include the development of an artist-in-residency program in one teacher education course and one graduate course in the Fall of 2022 at The University of British Columbia. Encountering Berlant part one: Concepts otherwise
In Part 1 of 'Encountering Berlant', we encounter the promise and provocation of Lauren Berlant's work. In 1000-word contributions, geographers and others stay with what Berlant's thought offers contemporary human geography. They amplify an encounter with their work, demonstrating how a concept, idea, or style disrupts something, opens up a new possibility, or simply invites thinking otherwise. The encounters range across the incredible body of w…

Youth Swimming Ability and Associated Factors in the United States, 2010-17
Objective Learning to swim is recommended for children to prevent drowning and to promote lifelong physical activity. Dissimilar US youth swimming ability rates by demographics have been reported. Our research purpose was to examine youth swimming ability by selected variables, and to compare with similar research in 2010. Walkings-through paint: A c/a/r/tography of slow scholarship
This visual essay portrays a walkings-through of experience, journeys, and engagements positioned as a c/a/r/tography. The assemblage of this c/a/r/tography draws upon Deleuzoguattarian notions of affect and the carte, the methodology of a/r/tography, and contemporary art and research ambulatory practices. The walkings-through are staged in the event of painting, which itself draws upon notions of movement, journey, and affect. Positioning this w…
The Legacy of Fear: Is Fear Impacting Fatal and Non-Fatal Drowning of African American Children
African American children’s rates for fatal and non-fatal drowning events are alarmingly elevated, with some age groups having three times the rate as compared to White peers. Adequate swimming skills are considered a protective agent toward the prevention of drowning, but marginalized youth report limited swimming ability. This research examined minority children’s and parents/caregivers’ fear of drowning as a possible variable associated with l…
A/r/tographic Collaboration as Radical Relatedness
In this paper the authors examine a/r/tographical collaboration in a community-engaged research study investigating immigrant understandings of home and place. The study, The City of Richgate, involves a complex collaboration between community members, community organizations, educational institutions, and a research team comprising artist-educators. The study crosses border zones of cultural, ethnic, geographic, institutional, public, private, a…
Lingering in liminal spaces: A/r/tography as living inquiry in a language arts class
In this article, we explore how we live among students and teachers as a/r/tographers and how we become creatively immersed in the wholeness of the classroom experience as a result. This is in contrast to our initial intentions of using ethnographic techniques and qualitative methods. As we began our project, it became apparent that another lens would be more appropriate for our study: this lens was a/r/tography. Exploring our research processes …

A/r/tography as Living Inquiry Through Art and Text
There is a substantial body of literature on arts-based forms of research demonstrating scholars' endeavors to theorize the production of the arts as a mode of scholarly inquiry and as a method of representation. However, if arts-based research is to be taken seriously as an emerging field of educational research, then perhaps it needs to be understood as a methodology in its own right. This entails moving beyond the use of existing criteria that…
