  • Prolonging working life in Japan

    Julien Martine, Jacques Jaussaud•ARTICLE•Contemporary Japan•2018•Cited by: 3•References: 1

As a result of the rapidly aging society, Japan's public policies and related academic research have sought to address issues related to the employment of older workers. However, these efforts do not sufficiently consider how human resources management practices might facilitate effective policies. In response, this study investigates both the challenges and the solutions that employers have adopted to deal with an aging workforce. In particular,…

  • Valorisation boursière comparée des entreprises familiales et non familiales au Japon

Open Access•Bruno Amann, Jacques Jaussaud et al.•ARTICLE•Ebisu•2013•References: 4

This paper investigates whether being a family business or not effects a company’s stock market valuation in the context of Japan. Our empirical investigation involved ninety pairs of listed companies, each pair consisting of one family and one non-family business of the same size and from the same industry. We found that there is little difference between the way family and non-family businesses are evaluated by financial markets. The tendency i…

Shareholder activism has grown in popularity during the last decade (first in the US, followed by Europe, then Japan) as a reaction to management latitude. Shareholder activism is defined as shareholders claiming their power as company owners to influence a corporation's behavior. One of the most common issues addressed through shareholder activism is the topic of Corporate Social…

  • The Control of International Equity Joint Venture

Jacques Jaussaud, Johannes Schaaper et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of the Asia Pacific Economy•2001

Our research focuses on two main instruments of control over international joint ventures: the distribution of capital between partners and the expatriation policies of managers. Various studies show that the distribution of capital differs according to the degree of development of the host country. Using systematic random pulling of 323 international examples in the 1999 directory of the subsidiary companies of Japanese firms world-wide, we subj…

The principles of human resources management are under high pressure in Japan because of the low growth perspectives and the aging working population. Nowadays, large firms have had to forsake a number of permanent employees. Will this mean the end of the lifetime employment system, a relevant issue indeed considering the incentive theory. Reducing the work force is not incompatible with the lifetime employment system. This article studies how la…
