Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 2012. xiv, 207 pages. £60.00, cloth; $79.00, E-book. In 2000, Nanette Gottlieb wrote that Japanese word-processing (JWP) technology had “put paid to any remaining hopes of romanisation by solving the hitherto stubborn input-output problem”; romanizatio…

  • What linguistic units do Chinese characters represent

    J Marshall Unger•ARTICLE•Written Language & Literacy•2011

Using the Internet and spreadsheet software, it is now easy to compare word and character counts for modern and literary Chinese based on very large corpora. It turns out that word counts comply with Zipf’s Law whereas character counts do not. This constitutes novel statistical evidence against the persistent claim that Chinese characters are logograms. It thus casts doubt on the practice of categorizing the elements of various writing systems as…

  • The Role of Contact in the Origins of the Japanese and Korean Languages

J Marshall Unger•BOOK•Role of Contact in the Origins of…•2009

Despite decades of research on the reconstruction of proto-Korean-Japanese (pKJ), some scholars still reject a genetic relationship. This study addresses their doubts in a new way, interpreting comparative linguistic data within a context of material and cultural evidence, much of which has come to light only in recent years. The weaknesses of the reconstruction, according to J. Marshall Unger, are due to the early date at which pKJ split apart a…

  • Internal reconstruction in Hungarian

    J Marshall Unger•ARTICLE•Diachronica•2005

An internal reconstruction of Hungarian based mostly on the morphophonemic alternations of the modern language yields dramatically different results from those obtained from a purely synchronic approach to the same data. This article presents such a reconstruction and argues that the striking contrast between the forms and processes it entails and those favored by a synchronic analysis demonstrates the need to give performance ( parole ) at least…

  • Reconciling Comparative and Internal Reconstruction

    J Marshall Unger•ARTICLE•Language•2000•Cited by: 1

Some Korean-Japanese comparisons involving Japanese coronals complicate the internal reconstruction of pre-Old Japanese. Post-OJ verb forms that end uniformly in, for example, ki have distinct OJ final syllables ( ki ≠ kwi ) according to the form or paradigm of the verb. This is not true for OJ syllables like ti , but scholars have assumed that pre-OJ * ti ≠ * twi , etc., were distributed in corresponding verb forms in the same way as OJ ki ≠ kwi…

  • Literacy and Script Reform in Occupation Japan

J Marshall Unger, Nanette Gottlieb•BOOK•Script reform in occupation Japan•1996•Cited by: 3

Japanese writing intermingles three different sets of characters, making it difficult to adapt to new technology. Unger looks at why the Japanese have not reformed their orthography and specifically the efforts at script reform that took place after the Second World War, and how and why that movement was defeated

L'A. examine de maniere critique les hypotheses de G. Sampson (1994) a propos du systeme d'ecriture chinois. La question est de savoir quels sont les criteres qui definissent un systeme d'ecriture comme etant partiel ou complet. L'A. propose deux criteres: a) la presence ou l'absence d'un element phonographique dans le systeme; b) le degre de fonctionnalite de ce systeme, c'est-a-dire s'il est possible d'apprendre ce systeme pour des raisons prat…

It has been claimed that such machines are the technology of the future, and whoever gets them first will emerge as the new leader of the world economy. In this book J.
