Argonaute2 and Argonaute4 Involved in the Pathogenesis of Kawasaki Disease via mRNA Expression Profiles
The data revealed that the AGO2 and AGO4 genes displayed significant within-group differences with p = 0.034 and 0.007, respectively. In AGO2, significant differences were observed between KD1 vs. HC + FC with p = 0.034. KD1 appears higher than the other specimens in AGO4, with significant differences between KD1 and HC ( p = 0.033), KD1 and FC ( p = 0.033), KD1 and KD3 ( p = 0.013), and KD1 and HC + FC ( p = 0.007). We observed no substantial di…
Basophils Predict Mite Sensitization in Patients with Kawasaki Disease
Background : Patients with Kawasaki disease (KD) are at a significantly increased risk of allergic diseases. Immunoglobulin E (IgE) is an immunoglobulin that mediates allergic sensitization to various allergens and is related to various allergic diseases. However, few studies have analyzed specific IgE on allergy biomarkers after KD is diagnosed. Objective : This study aimed to investigate the pattern of specific IgE levels against food and inhal…
Hemoglobin and Its Z Score Reference Intervals in Febrile Children
The study findings revealed that the Hb references varied depending on the age of the children and their CRP levels. In addition, we established new reference values for Hb and its Z scores and explore their relationship with CRP. It provides valuable insights into the Hb status and its potential association with inflammation in febrile pediatric patients
Multimedia Mixed Reality Interactive Shared Decision-Making Game in Children with Moderate to Severe Atopic Dermatitis, a Pilot Study
(1) Objective: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a recurring skin disease that affects children's daily activities and sleep quality. Due to the limitations of children's understanding and ability to express themselves, shared decision making (SDM) is often made by guardians, which thus affects the acceptance and effectiveness of children's treatments. Previous studies have demonstrated that involving both children and parents in decision making may help…
Comparison of Laboratory Data between Children with Kawasaki Disease and Covid-19
In this COVID-19 pandemic period, clinicians should pay attention to children with COVID-19 infection when high WBC, platelet, procalcitonin, and AST values are present in order to provide early diagnosis for KD or multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C)
Allergen Tests of Fruit Sensitization Involving Children with Allergic Diseases
Fruit is a kind of plant food which is rich in nutrients and immune-regulating ingredients. A meta-analysis has demonstrated that fruits have a protective effects against asthma. On the other hand, clinical syndromes of allergic reactions to fruits manifest as an oral allergy syndrome. We aimed to investigate the patterns and associated factors of fruit allergen-specific IgE (sIgE) sensitization among patients with suspected clinical symptoms. Da…
Combination of Hemoglobin-for-Age Z-Score and Plasma Hepcidin Identified as a Novel Predictor for Kawasaki Disease
Kawasaki disease (KD) is a febrile coronary vasculitis that affects younger children and includes complications such as coronary artery aneurysm. KD diagnoses are diagnosed based on clinical presentations, a process that still poses a challenge for front-line physicians. In the current study, we developed a novel predictor using the hemoglobin-for-age z-score (HbZ) and plasma hepcidin to differentiate Kawasaki disease (KD) from febrile children (…
Desquamation in Kawasaki Disease
(1) Background: Desquamation is a common characteristic of Kawasaki disease (KD). In this study, we analyzed patients' varying desquamation levels in their hands or feet, in correlation with clinical presentation, to assess the relationship. (2) Methods: We retrospectively reviewed children with KD. We analyzed their age, laboratory data before intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) treatment and coronary artery abnormalities (CAA) based on the desqua…
Public Health Interventions for the Covid-19 Pandemic Reduce Respiratory Tract Infection-Related Visits at Pediatric Emergency Departments in Taiwan
Background and objective: Public health interventions such as social distancing, wearing surgical or N95 masks, and handwashing are effective in significantly reducing the risk of infection. The purpose of this article is to analyze the effect of public health interventions on respiratory tract infection-related visits to pediatric emergency departments during the COVID-19 pandemic in Taiwan. Method: Pediatric emergency department visits between …
Identifying Downregulation of Autophagy Markers in Kawasaki Disease
Kawasaki disease (KD) is the most common cause of heart disease acquired in childhood. Even if treated with high-dose intravenous immunoglobulin G (IVIG) at the early stage; children are still at risk of developing coronary artery lesions. Accumulating evidence suggests that autophagy is enhanced in various heart diseases. Evaluating the pathogenic role of autophagy in KD and coronary artery lesions (CAL) may aid in identifying a potential therap…
Making a Decision between Acute Appendicitis and Acute Gastroenteritis
Acute appendicitis is one of the most common pediatric abdominal emergencies. Early diagnosis is vital for a positive outcome. However, it may initially present with diarrhea and vomiting, mimicking acute gastroenteritis, thus delaying prompt surgery. Differentiating appendicitis from gastroenteritis in a timely manner poses a challenge. Therefore, we aim to investigate the predictors that help distinguish acute appendicitis from acute gastroente…
Blood Mercury Levels in Children with Kawasaki Disease and Disease Outcome
The risk of ethnic Kawasaki disease (KD) has been proposed to be associated with blood mercury levels in American children. We investigated the blood levels of mercury in children with KD and their association with disease outcome. The mercury levels demonstrated a significantly negative correlation with sodium levels ( p = 0.007). However, data failed to reach a significant difference after excluding the child with blood mercury exceeding the to…
