Mānī on the Margins
Mānī (216–ca. 277 AD), the founder of Manichaeism, was brought up in a Jewish-Christian community at the end of the Arsacid dynasty. After several private revelations, he established his own religion, which he and his disciples propagated in the newly established Sasanian Iran. Spreading east along the Silk Road, Manichaeism arrived in China in 694, where it remained basically a religio licita until 843. After the Huichang persecution (843–845), …
Motisták és konfuciánusok vitatémiái az ókori Kínában II
A kínai filozófiatörténetben közismert ténynek számít, hogy az i. e. 5–4. században a konfuciánusok és a motisták szemben álltak egymással. A két irányzat képviselőinek disputáiról összesen három típusú forrás tudósít bennünket: 1. A külső források, amelyek a két irányzat vitáiról külső szemlélőként tudósítanak. 2. A konfuciánus források, amelyek leginkább a motizmussal szembeni konfuciánus kritikákat tartalmazzák; 3. A motista források, amelyek …

A kínai filozófiatörténetben közismert ténynek számít, hogy az i. e. V–IV. században a konfuciánusok és a motisták szemben álltak egymással. A két irányzat képviselőinek disputáiról összesen háromtípusú forrás tudósít: 1. A külső források, amelyek a két irányzat vitáiról külső szemlélőként tudósítanak. 2. Internet Addiction and Burnout in A Single Hospital
The extensive availability of the internet has led to the recognition of problematic internet use, the so-called Internet Addiction (IA), mostly involving adolescents. Burnout can lead to substance abuse or addictive behaviour (such as internet addiction) as a coping method. There are insufficient data about internet addiction and its possible association with burnout in adults, especially among healthcare workers. The aim of our present study wa…
A Dhammacakkappavattana-sutta egyik korai kínai fordítása
In this paper I offer the Hungarian translation and commentary of a rather early Chinese translation of the Dhammacakkappavattana-sutta (‘Setting the Wheel of Dhamma in Motion’), one of the most important Buddhist suttas recounting the first sermon of the historical Buddha. This Chinese translation (T02n109: Fo shuo zhuan falun jing 佛說轉法輪經), slightly neglected in previous research, is traditionally attributed to An Shigao 安世高 (2nd c. AD), but I a…
Az aszkézis módjai az Udumbarika-sutta három kínai fordításában
The Udumbarika-sutta is the 25th text of the Dīghanikāya in the Pāli Canon, and has three Chinese translations: 1. Youtanpoluo jing 優曇婆邏經 [T01n0026] (4th c.); 2. Santuona jing 散陀那經 [T01n0001p0047a17–49b25] (5th c.); 3. Nijutuo fanzhi jing 尼拘陀梵志經 [T01n0011p0223a09–p0223b28] (10th c.). In this paper I compare the three versions to show that they offer surprisingly different descriptions of ascetic practices; these differences may be traced back to …

Zhuangzi a Selyemúton
In the first part of my paper, I survey the Daoist manuscripts found in thelibrary cave (Cave 17) of Dunhuang. After a brief summary of the textual history of the Zhuangzi 莊子 and its commentaries, I focus on a single manuscriptkept at the British Library (S.796). I offer the transcription and Hungariantranslation of the preserved part of ch. 10 of Zhuangzi, accompanied by thecommentary of Guo Xiang 郭象 (252–312 AD). Furthermore, while concentratin…

A hegyek rituális szerepe a Shang-korban
The two major groups of primary sources deriving from the Shang 商 dynasty are that of bronze vessels and oracle bones. The inscriptions preserved onthe latter predominantly offer an insight into the religious realm of this earlyChinese dynasty: offerings were directed to the pre-dynastic and dynasticancestors of the royal lineage, as well as to various divine representatives ofnature. The inscriptions, among others, attest to the cult of a mounta…
The Manichaean Attitude to Natural Phenomena as Reflected in the Berlin Kephalaia
The relationship between religion and science is a hotly debated issue, which has triggered new approaches and redefinitions of fundamental notions worldwide. This paper presents a preliminary sketch of the Manichaean attitude towards natural phenomena, thus exploring the question of the relation of religion to science—even if these notions are not necessarily applicable for early, non-European phenomena—in a historical context. In my survey, I u…
