Early 20th century beginnings of Hungarian theoretical psychology of language
The paper analyzes some early theoretical works on psychology of language presented in the works of the trend setting historical linguist Zoltán Gombocz (1887–1935), Antal Klemm (1883–1963) a master of historical syntax, and Gyula Lux (1884–1957) a successful language education expert. All three were representatives of classical mentalistic linguistics, and interpreted language as relevant for psychology, even if they emphasized change instead of…
Társas és társadalmi megkülönböztetése a klasszikus és a mai pszichológiában
A történelmi áttekintő tanulmány megmutatja, miként alakult a társas [social] és a társadalmi [societal] viszonya a modern pszichológia több mint 150 éves története során. A 19. század végén mind a francia, mind a német korai történetben még gyakran használtak a „néplélekre” emlékeztető fogalmakat, amelyek azután a 20. század elejére is átöröklődtek a McDougall-féle csoportlélek vagy Durkheim társas reprezentációi körüli viták közvetítésével. Az …

"Changes in Hungarian academic psychology after the end of "people's democracy
The paper surveys the last 30 years of Hungarian academic psychology. Around 1989-1990, the time of the great social changes Hungarian psychology was rather Westernized, but still a relatively small scientific field and applied profession. The opening and liberalization of politics made psychology in Hungary a booming profession and a rich research field. Education of psychologists was spreading, and becoming more Westernized in textbook usage an…
Modularity and pragmatics: Some simple and some complicated ways
The modular approach to language in its career of 30 years had alternating and rivaling views regarding the place of pragmatics. A first approach basically is the one outlined by Fodor (1983) that would pack pragmatic aspects of language use under the rubric of the mushy General Problem Solver component of the architecture, thus extracting it from considerations of modularity altogether. The rival Massive Modular approaches such as Dan Sperber’s …
Two versions of Marxist concrete psychology: Politzer and Mérei compared
This article will compare the life and work of two Marxist psychologists of the midtwentieth century, George Politzer (1903-1942) and Ferenc Mérei (1909-1986). Both were Hungarian Jews who were educated at the French Sorbonne. They were both involved in covert activities related to the French Communist movement in the 1920 and 1930s. As young communist intellectuals, they combined Marxist ideology with the need to elaborate a new psychology. I pr…
Recovering a French Tradition: Ignace Meyerson in focus
The paper is written on the occasion of a new French monograph by Noemi Pizarosso on Ignace Meyerson. This French mid 20th century intellectual has been one of the representatives of the early French non-individualistic social psychologies. Meyerson claimed that the mind undergoes radical changes during historical times. Relative to the other early historical psychologies, Meyerson was more radical and more relativistic in the historical sense. O…
From the constructive memory of Bartlett to narrative theories of social (Brady Wagoner): The constructive mind. Bartlett's Psychology in Reconstruction. 2017
The paper is partly a review of a new book by Brady Wagoner on Frederick Bartlett as a theoretician of constructive memory, and partly a survey of what has become of memory constructionism. The basic message of Wagoner analyzing Bartlett is that constructive memory processes are not the exception but the rule. The details of the reemergence of this memory model in modern cognitive psychology are clearly presented by Wagoner. One crucial point is …

Darwinism as a Decryption Key for the Human Mind
The essay summarizes some of the key results and debated issues of Darwinian psychology over the past 150 years. Comparative psychology, psychological anthropology, research into the ontogeny of the mind, evolutionary interpretations of knowledge, and the study of individual differences are the main areas where evolutionary explanations remarkably influence traditional psychology. All five of them show up in twentieth century developments within …
Emotional activation measured using the emotional Stroop task in early Hungarian-Serbian bilinguals from Serbia
The primary goal of this research was to examine the processing of emotionally valenced and neutral words in the context of bilingualism. The objective was to find out, using an experimental measure of automatic emotional activation, if there were differences in response time in the first and the second language, Hungarian and Serbian respectively. The sample consisted of early Hungarian-Serbian bilinguals, assimilated into the Serbian majority c…
The Effect of Alcohol on Speech Production
Guest editors’ note
The underlying motivation for this special issue of Acta Linguistica Hungarica came from the rather traditional recognition that, in languages that have a rich morphological structure, morphology certainly plays a crucial role in processing decisions.Morphology can be decisive in packaging word units into syntactically organized phrases. For an illustration from a language where surface constituency does not help a listener in relating parts of th…
Word order and focusing effects in the memory representation of Hungarian sentences
In two acoustic sentence recognition experiments the relative importance of recognition times (0 to 40 seconds) and relationships between the target sentence and test sentences were varied. Hungarian promised to be a good testing ground for traditional theories that claim that while form is readily forgotten, sentence meaning is preserved. In Hungarian, the informational structure of sentences allows for clear contrasts between neutral and meanin…
Bidirectional and unidirectional comitative constructions in Hungarian: A psycholinguistic investigation at the interface of argument structure and semantics
This paper explores how bidirectional and unidirectional comitative constructions are processed at the level of argument structure. Bidirectional comitative constructions describe events where the two actors undergo the same effect described by the predicate (e.g., John was kissing with Mary), whereas unidirectional comitative constructions describe events in which one of the actors is the agent, and the other one is the patient (e.g., John was m…
The effect of morphological complexity on short-term memory capacity
The main purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between verbal short-term memory and the morphological complexity of words. Hungarian, as an agglutinative language, is of special interest for psycholinguistic inquiries in morphology. The authors presented two word-list recall experiments. The recall of the word list was measured by the classical span design. The item lists consisted of two-syllable stems (base words) and two-syllab…
Spatial language in Williams Syndrome: Evidence for a special interaction
We present data on the language of space in Hungarian individuals with Williams syndrome (WS; 19 in the first, 15 in the second study, between 8;0 and 21;11) and a verbal control (VC) group of typically developing (TD; 19 in the first, 15 in the second study, between 3;5 and 10;7) children from: (1) a study of elicited production and comprehension of spatial terms; and (2) a sentence completion task on case markers in their spatial and non-spatia…

Linguistic Superego in a normative language community and the stigmatization– hypercorrection dimension
The paper analyzes the dynamics between hypercorrection and stigmatization over certain sensitive structures in Hungarian. Data on grammaticality judgments are mainly used, some obtained in standard questionnaire-based survey situations, some in a more interactive setting. As reported in the literature several times, strong effects of stigmatization and hypercorrection are observed over the same structures. The authors propose a metaphoric psycho…
Remembering the collective memory of Maurice Halbwachs
Cet article analyse la periode de l'entre-deux-guerres dans le travail de Maurice Halbwachs suivant deux axes. Son approche radicale est interpretee comme une campagne pour le reductionnisme sociologique en psychologie, i.e. pour une reduction sociale, a la difference de G. H. Mead ou Vygotsky, par exemple, chez qui l'interaction jouait un role central. Chez Halbwachs, l'analyse phenomenologique de la pensee individuelle et des phenomenes histori…

Social Class Differences in the Speech of Six Year Old Hungarian Children
This paper reports on a Hungarian study of social class differences in the speech of 65 six year old children from s primary schools in Budapest. Speech samples were collected from stories which were elicited by a series of pictures. Five quantitative indices of context-dependence were constructed; and, on the basis of these indices, context-dependence was related to the child's own social background and to the social composition of the school. I…

Sentence comprehension in Hungarian-Russian bilingual and monolingual preschool children
This paper's authors examine the interpretation of transitive sentences with varying word orders /SVO, OVS, SOV, OSV/. The subjects were Hungarian-Russian bilingual preschool children and their Hungarian and Russian monolingual peers. Bever's ‘first noun as agent’ strategy – as indicated by OVS and OSV errors – appears to be weaker in the bilinguals. An explanation for this is proposed in terms of Slobin's ‘attention to the end of words’ factor. …
