  • Consortium effect of Jatropha curcas seed husk and its endophyte Aspergillus niger on biosorption of manganese and nickel from wastewater

    Marwa Tamim A Abdel‐Wareth, Tahany M Abdel-Rahman et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2023

The aim of this study was to evaluate the manganese and nickel biosorption capacities of Jatropha curcas seed husk and its endophyte Aspergillus niger. We found that the optimum concentrations for Mn to be adsorbed by J. curcas seed husk and A. niger dry biomasses were 1.1 and 3.3 mg/L, respectively. For Ni, they were 4.56 and 6.84 mg/L, respectively. The highest biosorption capacities for J. curcas seed husk and A. niger were observed at pH 6 an…

  • Bacteriological, parasitological and chemical pollution of Nile River water at some Greater Cairo sites

    Hanaa M M El-Khayat, Eman S El-Wakil et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

The River Nile, Egypt’s main source of water, is polluted by agricultural, industrial and municipal wastewater discharges. The paper reports a study of biological pollution of river water through bacterial and parasitological analysis, besides chemical pollution by cadmium and lead. The researchers collected water samples seasonally from 12 sites in Greater Cairo along a year (from July 2019 to June 2020). Some sites were contaminated with total …

  • Pollution by organochlorine and organophosphorus pesticides residues in watercourses of some Egyptian governorates with reference to the distribution of macroinvertebrates

    Sara S M Sayed, Asmaa Abdel-Motleb et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

The paper reports an assessment of the quality of some watercourses located in three Egyptian governorates by investigation of organochlorine and organophosphorus pesticides residues, and the distribution of macroinvertebrates. Water and sediment samples were collected from the investigated sites in Giza, Qalubeya and Gharbeya governorates. The results showed that the total beta- hexachlorocyclohexane (β-HCH) was the highest in concentration amon…

  • Biological activities of endozoic fungi isolated from Biomphalaria alexandrina snails maintained in different environmental conditions

    Marwa Tamim A Abdel‐Wareth, Marwa T A Abdel-Wareth et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2019

This work aims at studying Biomphalaria alexandrina snails as a source of bioactive compounds. Adult snails were maintained in plastic, mud and cement matrices. Three groups were prepared; under normal laboratory conditions, in slightly low pH conditions, and in high temperature (30°C) conditions. Nine fungal species were isolated from soft tissues of snails. Ethyl acetate and acetone extracts were prepared from each fungal species, and their bio…

  • Response of Aspergillus flavus , Aspergillus niger and Penicillium citrinum to oxidative stress induced by Fenton’s reagent

    Marwa Tamim A Abdel‐Wareth, Marwa T A Abdel-Wareth et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2018

The presence of fungi in water systems represents a threat to human health. Hydrogen peroxide is known for its disinfecting properties and easy decomposition to water and oxygen. Its activity can be enhanced by the addition of iron as a catalyst, a reagent known as Fentonʼs reagent. In the present study, different Fenton concentrations were investigated on the spores of Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus niger and Penicillium citrinum at different t…

  • Mycoremediation of chlorpyrifos and lambda-cyhalothrin by two species of filamentous fungi

    Marwa Tamim A Abdel‐Wareth, Marwa T A Abdel-Wareth et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2016

Chlorpyrifos and lambda-cyhalothrin are two of the most commonly used insecticides in agriculture. Their residues reach water courses, affecting aquatic fauna and subsequently human beings. Aspergillus viridinutans and Penicillium implicatum isolated from water drains at El-Giza and El-Ismailia governorates were grown in potato dextrose broth media supplemented with different concentrations of chlorpyrifos and lambda-cyhalothrin. Samples, taken a…

  • Separation of a compound effective against Biomphalaria alexandrina snails from the filtrate of Penicillium janthinellum

    Abd El-Halim A Saad, Magdy T Khalil et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2016

Biomphalaria alexandrina snails, as intermediate hosts of schistosomiasis, play a central role in dissemination of the disease. Control of these snails by chemical molluscicides adversely affects the aquatic environment, causing toxic and carcinogenic effects on non-target organisms. Searching for promising substances from biological origin becomes an urgent need to overcome these drawbacks. Screening tests were carried out on 236 fungal genera i…
