Between listening and refusal: Psychoanalysis, patient autonomy, and Euthanasia in Belgium
In 2002, Belgium enacted three laws that significantly shaped the organisation of end-of-life care: the Patients’ Rights Act, the Euthanasia Act, and the Palliative Care Act. A shared emphasis across these laws is the promotion of patient autonomy. The Euthanasia Act, among the most liberal in the world, does not exclude euthanasia for individuals with psychiatric disorders, provided all legal criteria are met. While the Act enjoys broad public a…

Reasonable Irrationality: The Role of Reasons in the Diffusion of Pseudoscience
Pseudoscience spreads through communicative and inferential processes that make people vulnerable to weird beliefs. However, the fact that pseudoscientific beliefs are unsubstantiated and have no basis in reality does not mean that the people who hold them have no reasons for doing so. We propose that, reasons play a central role in the diffusion of pseudoscience. On the basis of cultural epidemiology and the interactionist theory of reasoning, w…

Morality and involvement in social virtual worlds: The intensity of moral emotions in response to virtual versus real life cheating
Our focus lies on moral emotions in the social virtual world Second Life (SL). Based on media equation theory we could expect that moral emotions regulate social virtual interactions in a similar way as they do in real life (RL). However, emotions are also linked with involvement, and SL residents presumably are more involved in SL compared to non-residents. Via two quasi-experiments, we tested to what extent moral emotions felt when being cheate…
Creationism in Europe: Facts, Gaps, and Prospects
The purpose of our article is threefold. First, we present and discuss the extant literature on creationism in Europe (the “facts”). Within this section, we offer a review of the literature as well as an overview of the most remarkable developments and events recorded therein. Second, we indicate which material is missing from the literature (the “gaps”) and signal which gaps we think should first be filled. Third, on the basis of a forthcoming i…

Social Capital and Post-Conflict Reconstruction in Burundi: The Limits of Community-based Reconstruction
Using an examination of three NGO interventions in post-conflict Burundi, this article questions community-based reconstruction as a mechanism to rebuild social capital after conflicts, particularly when direct livelihood support is provided. The authors demonstrate a general shortcoming of the methodology employed in community-based development (CBD), namely its focus on 'technical procedural design', which results in what may be termed 'supply-…
Livelihoods, power, and food insecurity: Adaptation of social capital portfolios in protracted crises-case study Burundi
The failure of food security and livelihood interventions to adapt to conflict settings remains a key challenge in humanitarian responses to protracted crises. This paper proposes a social capital analysis to address this policy gap, adding a political economy dimension on food security and conflict to the actor-based livelihood framework. A case study of three hillsides in north Burundi provides an ethnographic basis for this hypothesis. While r…
Grappling with Evolutionary Theory. Femininities and Masculinities in the Work of Virginie Loveling (1836–1923)
In this article, the authors discuss evolutionary thought as it manifests itself in the literary works of the (Flemish) Belgian writer Virginie Loveling (1836–1923). By introducing certain aspects of the evolutionary ideologies popular in Europe in the last decades of the nineteenth century, Loveling fulfilled a mediating role in the production and dispersion of knowledge. In her novels she integrates the mechanisms of natural and sexual selectio…
How convenient! The epistemic rationale of self-validating belief systems
This paper offers an epistemological discussion of self-validating belief systems and the recurrence of "epistemic defense mechanisms" and "immunizing strategies" across widely different domains of knowledge. We challenge the idea that typical "weird" belief systems are inherently fragile, and we argue that, instead, they exhibit a surprising degree of resilience in the face of adverse evidence and criticism. Borrowing from the psychological rese…

Patterns and Universals of Adult Romantic Attachment Across 62 Cultural Regions: Are Models of Self and of Other Pancultural Constructs
As part of the International Sexuality Description Project, a total of 17,804 participants from 62 cultural regions completedthe RelationshipQuestionnaire(RQ), a self-reportmeasure of adult romanticattachment. Correlational analyses within each culture suggested that the Model of Self and the Model of Other scales of the RQ were psychometrically valid within most cultures. Contrary to expectations, the Model of Self and Model of Other dimensions …
