  • Resisting punishment as a rights-claiming activity: Grounded normative theory, civil disobedience, and the right to protest

Open Access•Daniel Edler Duarte, Jonathan Havercroft et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Rights•2026

International human rights norms protect the right to freedom of assembly, yet states increasingly use the legal system to criminalize dissent. A key philosophical idea used to distinguish “legitimate” from “illegitimate” acts of civil disobedience is the punishment proviso, which insists activists must willingly accept the resulting legal consequences of their actions. Building on grounded normative theory (GNT), we assess whether and when this …

  • Reconsidering the ‘post-truth critique: Scientific controversies and pandemic responses in Brazil

Open Access•Daniel Edler Duarte, Pedro Benetti et al.•ARTICLE•Social Studies of Science•2025•References: 9

Science and Technology Studies (STS) has long been criticized for eroding science’s authority and blurring the line between opinions and facts, and more recently for contributing to the emergence of ‘far-right populists’ and ‘anti-science movements’. This article argues that ‘post-truth politics’ does not necessarily entail epistemic democratization. This claim is based on an investigation of the controversies surrounding public health policies d…

  • A vida pública de fatos científicos: Ciência e política na CPI da pandemia no Brasil

    Open Access•Daniel Edler Duarte, Pedro Benetti et al.•ARTICLE•Estudos Avançados•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 16

  • A "war on science?" Far-right movements and the disputes over epistemic authority in Brazil

Open Access•Daniel Edler Duarte, Pedro Benetti et al.•ARTICLE•Tapuya Latin American Science…•2024•Cited by: 2•References: 39

Current research on post-truth politics often portrays a war waged by anti-science populists against pure, truth-seeking scientists. This critical framework was replicated in Brazil, where the former President Jair Bolsonaro was accused of neglecting scientific expertise to promote alternative treatments for the COVID-19 pandemic.Bolsonaro was deemed responsible for replacing sound scientific evidence with religious and ideological claims, resulti…

  • Tecnopolíticas da falha: Dispositivos De Crítica E Resistência a Novas Ferramentas Punitivas

    Open Access•Daniel Edler Duarte•ARTICLE•Revista Brasileira de Ciências…•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 19

    Open Access•Daniel Edler Duarte, Pedro Benetti•ARTICLE•Sociologias•2022•Cited by: 9•References: 29

  • Viral surveillance: Governing social isolation in São Paulo, Brazil, during the Covid-19 Pandemic

Open Access•Alcides Eduardo Dos Reis Peron, Daniel Edler Duarte et al.•ARTICLE•Social Sciences & Humanities Open•2021

In the context of COVID-19 pandemics, Brazilian cities implemented social isolation policies and deployed digital systems to monitor urban mobility. This article addresses the setting of two digital technologies based on massive cell-phone data collection by private companies in São Paulo state. We relied on secondary data from multiple sources (press conferences, interviews, newspaper articles, public documents), complemented by primary data fro…

  • The The Making of Crime Predictions: Sociotechnical Assemblages and the Controversies of Governing Future Crime

    Open Access•Daniel Edler Duarte•ARTICLE•Surveillance & Society•2021•Cited by: 3•References: 11

We are witnessing an upsurge in crime forecasting software, which supposedly draws predictive knowledge from data on past crime. Although prevention and anticipation are already embedded in the apparatuses of government, going beyond a mere abstract aspiration, the latest innovations hold out the promise of replacing police officers’ “gut feelings” and discretionary risk assessments with algorithmic-powered, quantified analyses of risk scores. Wh…

  • Securitising Covid-19? The Politics of Global Health and the Limits of the Copenhagen School

    Open Access•Daniel Edler Duarte, Marília Marília Valença•ARTICLE•Contexto Internacional•2021•Cited by: 3•References: 43

The COVID-19 pandemic has sparked controversies over health security strategies adopted in different countries. The urge to curb the spread of the virus has supported policies to restrict mobility and to build up state surveillance, which might induce authoritarian forms of government. In this context, the Copenhagen School has offered an analytical repertoire that informs many analyses in the fields of critical security studies and global health…
