Risk reconsidered
This study explored how risk in the context of sexual health is conceptualised in research related to gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men during a period of major biomedical change, including the scale-up of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and the Undetectable = Untransmittable (U = U) campaign, prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. A systematic search across Medline (OVID), CINAHL, and Scopus identified studies published and/or with dat…
Operation of Analog MOS Circuits in the Weak or Moderate Inversion Region
In analog metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) circuit design, the ratio of channel width to channel length (W/L) can become very high, often exceeding a value of 1000. This high ratio may result either from wide channel devices, designed to achieve high transconductance, or from short-channel-length devices used in high-frequency circuits. Since drain current is generally proportional to the W/L ratio, the effective gate-to-source voltage to achieve …
Teaching MOS integrated circuit amplifier design to undergraduates
The enhancement-mode MOSFET is the primary active device used in present-day digital and mixed-signal integrated circuit processes. Thus, it is important to introduce this device and associated circuit design methods early in the electronics curriculum. This article discusses four integrated circuit MOSFET amplifier configurations; the current source/active load stage, the source follower, the cascode connection, and the differential stage with a…
A new amplifier circuit with both practical and tutorial value
This paper introduces an amplifier circuit that is based on the use of current mirrors. The circuit is of interest not only because of its simplicity and performance, but also because of its tutorial value in illustrating integrated circuit design philosophies and practical application of the current mirror
Digital System Design
This paper considers the use of a microprocessor as a controller for digital systems. It is suggested that the microprocessor controller can be considered as a state machine with each state being defined in terms of possible machine instructions. The strengths and weaknesses of this device are discussed. A design procedure is proposed that allows comparison of a conventional state machine design to microprocessor design of a digital system that c…
Application of Top-Down Principles to Digital System Design
The concept of top-down design of programs is directly transferable to digital system design. This approach is not only useful in practical design, it is an excellent vehicle to use in teaching digital design classes. Top-down design of digital systems is considered here along with an example of this method
Teaching Transistor Circuit Design to Undergraduate Engineers
A simple equivalent circuit is proposed which can form the basis for undergraduate courses in circuit design. The circuit sacrifices a small amount of accuracy in gaining a great deal of simplicity. Since this equivalent circuit applies to all areas of design, a unified, practical approach to transistor design can be developed. Several justifications are presented for using this equivalent circuit rather than other design methods
