Illegal Encounters: The Effect of Detention and Deportation on Young People
French Chocolate as Intangible Cultural Heritage
This chapter focuses on the attempt by one community of French artisanal chocolatiers to identify their products, skills, and craft community as forms of intangible cultural heritage. French chocolatiers are as concerned with seeking recognition for a proven confectionery heritage as they are in producing new chocolate traditions that they represented as quintessentially French. Their initiatives draw on essentialist notions of cultural tradition…
Migrants in Translation. Caring and the Logics of Difference in Contemporary Italy, Christiana Giordano
This book is an original and important contribution to our understanding of the politics of humanitarianism, citizenship, and cultural difference in contemporary Italy. In the context of an influx of non-European migrants, the only option for those seeking legal status under current Italian immigration law is to qualify as a refugee or victim of human trafficking. Rather than a chronicle of the migratory journey, the book focuses on the reception…
Whose Child Am I: Unaccompanied, Undocumented Children in U.S. Immigration Custody
In 2014, the arrest and detention of thousands of desperate young migrants at the southwest border of the United States exposed the U.S. government's shadowy juvenile detention system, which had escaped public scrutiny for years. This book tells the story of six Central American and Mexican children who are driven from their homes by violence and deprivation, and who embark alone, risking their lives, on the perilous journey north. They suffer co…

Le Parkour: Urban Street Culture and the Commoditization of Male Youth Expression
This article considers the global distribution and commoditization of an extreme sport, Le Parkour, which was popularized by working class Parisian teenagers from the marginalized suburban projects. It examines the transformation of a localized phenomenon associated with the subversive use of urban space into a globalized and dynamic cultural form practiced on the street, in films and theatrical productions and in on‐line communities. The authors…

Missing: Youth, Citizenship, and Empire after 9/11 by Sunaina Marr Maira
New Barbarians at the Gates of Paris: Prosecuting Undocumented Minors in the Juvenile Court-The Problem of the 'Petits Roumains
This article centers on the unaccompanied, undocumented minors who are arrested and subject to prosecution for non-violent offenses at the Paris juvenile court in disproportionate numbers. It illustrates the processes whereby public authorities distinguish between the criminal vagrant whose agency and choice makes him more accountable and liable for punishment and the victimized child whose vulnerability and manipulation by others makes him less …
The French Riots: Questioning Spaces of Surveillance and Sovereignty
This paper examines the riots in France in late 2005 in terms of how they lead to a reconceptualization of the spaces of danger, culture, territory, and sovereignty. It traces a brief history of danger zones and immigration, noting how these two terms have increasingly overlapped. We analyse key discursive formations ‐ legal, political, social scientific, and media ‐ whose explanation for the emergence of the “immigrant” delinquent is linked to w…
Who Are the Rioters in France
Silence in the Court and Testimony Behind Bars Juvenile Defendants and the French Judicial System
This article addresses salient questions in literature and anthropology centring on the politics of writing, readership and representation in a context marked by highly charged public debates on the nature, causes and perpetrators of youth violence. It critically examines and juxtaposes two sets of texts, one set produced by incarcerated youths in a writing workshop at a juvenile detention facility in Bordeaux, and the other taken from court tran…
Migration, Displacement, and Violence: Prosecuting Romanian Street Children at the Paris Palace of Justice
This paper examines the displacement and vulnerability associated with the migration of unaccompanied illegal Romanian minors who came as economic migrants to Western Europe, found no legal opportunities for work or education, and were forced into criminal activity on the streets of French cities such as Paris, Lyon, and Nice. Beginning in 1997 growing numbers of unaccompanied Romanians, mostly boys, some as young as age ten, many younger than ag…

Bibliography Crafting the Culture and History of French Chocolate
Chocolate is one of those things, like fashion or sex, for which an academic study is likely to find a ready audience. It even appeals to pop notables who might not normally be expected to interest themselves in contemporary anthropological topics-for example, fashion designer Sonya Rykiel, only one among a host of celebrities who have publicly confessed their chocoholism
Crafting the Culture and History of French Chocolate
This absorbing narrative follows the craft community of French chocolatiers--members of a tiny group experiencing intensive international competition--as they struggle to ensure the survival of their businesses. Susan J. Terrio moves easily among ethnography, history, theory, and vignette, telling a story that challenges conventional views of craft work, associational forms, and training models in late capitalism. She enters the world of Parisian…
Craft, class and chocolate: Using cultural anthropology as a critical resource in the study of French civilization
Performing Craft for Heritage Tourists in Southwest France
RECENT HERITAGE TOURISM initiatives have affected the gendered division of labor in craft confectionery businesses in southwest France. These initiatives blur the traditional boundary between the public space of the confectionery boutique controlled by artisanal wives and the private space of the adjoining workshop controlled by their craftsmen husbands. Tasks once performed by women such as the cultivation of a craft mystique and the education o…
Crucible of the Millennium: The Clovis Affair in Contemporary France
I spent the 1996 Columbus Day holiday weekend in Bayonne in southwest France lecturing on the ethnographic fieldwork research I had conducted among a community of artisanal chocolatiers six years earlier.See Terrio 1998:18–31. 1996 was proclaimed the Year of Chocolate in Bayonne by municipal leaders and local chocolatiers. This event was an ambitious commemoration involving a series of public lectures organized to celebrate the southwest as the h…
Deconstructing Fieldwork in Contemporary Urban France
As anthropology's focus has become increasingly urban, cosmopolitan, and Western, conventional understandings of ethnographic authority, access, and power relations are contested and problematized in new, more complex ways. This essay closely examines the politics of research and the process of ethnographic fieldwork. It focuses on the centrality of texts, not as theoretical models, but as critical sources of data and as strategic sites of negoti…
