Ryle's war: Analysing the coded messages of Hitler's Abwehr
Biographical articles on Gilbert Ryle—one of the 20th century’s greatest philosophers, remembered especially for his iconoclastic contributions to the philosophy of mind—tend to pass over his wartime years in silence, content with the meagre phrase ‘seconded to intelligence’. Yet those dark years were an important time in Ryle’s life and philosophical development. The investigation presented in this article extends from the time of his last philo…
Race, gender, and age discrepancies in police motor vehicle stops in Knoxville, Tennessee: Evidence of racially biased policing
This paper examines 130,683 automobile stops made by officers of the Knoxville (Tennessee) Police Department (KPD) between January 2001 and December 2004 to determine whether KPD officers engage in racially biased policing. The motor vehicle stops, and what transpires during the stops, are analyzed in terms of the race, gender, and age of the stopped motorists. The authors conclude that these data do not provide clear evidence of racially biased …
The Holy Spirit and the Bible: The Spirit's Interpreting Role in Relation to Biblical Hermeneutics
The Hermeneutics of Fictional Black and Factual Red: The Markan Simon of Cyrene and the Quest for the Historical Jesus
This article notes the polarized nature of scholarship on Simon of Cyrene (Mark 15.21) and reviews the evidence used to support both the view that he is a fictional character and the view that he is a historical figure. This falls into four categories: competing traditions, homiletic function, absence of Christian witnesses, and the significance of Alexander and Rufus. Concluding that the evidence invoked cannot account for these divergent views,…
On the Life and Death of Joseph of Arimathea
Recent studies have raised significant questions about where the historical Joseph of Arimathea ends and the Joseph of legend begins. Here it is argued that the Markan Joseph was a devout Jew who buried Jesus for reasons of either personal piety or communal duty. He was subsequently either 'defended' as a sympathizer (Luke), explicitly 'converted' (Matthew, John), or suppressed by 'harmonizing' commentators. Both Crossan's argument that Mark crea…

A Tale of Two Electorates: Generational Replacement and the Decline of Voting in Presidential Elections
This article revisits the question of voter turnout in American presidential elections from the perspective of political generations. We extend previous analyses by examining the entire period between 1952 and 1966 by further specifying the turnout model and, most important, by incorporating a generational component. We hypothesize that the direct effect of membership in the cohort born prior to 1932 is to increase voter turnout and the indirect …
Violence and the Politics of Law and Order
Crime Is Not the Problem makes a case for prioritizing violence reduction as a separate and distinct problem from crime more generally. Zimring and Hawkins persuasively argue that we live with distinctively high levels of lethal violence, within a high-- gun-use environment, where the most lethal forms of violence are concentrated in the least-advantaged inner-city communities. Their analysis suggests important questions that may indeed change th…
The Politics of Community Policing: Rearranging the Power to Punish
In this in-depth examination of community policing in Seattle, William T. Lyons, Jr. explores the complex issues associated with the establishment and operation of community policing, an increasingly popular method for organizing law enforcement in this country. Stories about community policing appeal to a nostalgic vision of traditional community life. Community policing carries with it the image of a safe community in which individual citizens …

Beyond agreement and disagreement: The inappropriate use of Likert items in the applied research culture
Academics and others have long made use of survey items framed in a Likert form. This type of question, where respondents are asked to agree or disagree with a series of statements, has long been a staple of those creating attitude scales. There has, however, been increasing use of these items in inappropriate settings. This article discusses the appropriate and inappropriate use of Likert items in social science research, using three settings wh…

The mentor in graduate education
The study examined the presence of mentors in and some of their effects on doctoral student education. It was hypothesised that males would be mentored at a significantly higher rate than females; and that a positive overall evaluation of one's graduate experiences at the doctoral level would be positively related to having a mentor. Data were gathered using a survey questionnaire completed by doctoral students. No evidence was found that males a…

Industrialization and Affluence Revisited: A Note on Socioeconomic Dimensions of the American States, 1970
The Industrialization and Affluence factor scores for the American states derived from 21 socioeconomic variables for 1960 are updated using 1970 data. Certain changes in the two dimensions are noted, but are of relatively small magnitude as revealed by the correlation of .80 between both measures for the two time periods. Some shifts also occur in rankings among the states, for example, the southern states have become relatively more industriali…

Emotion
In this study William Lyons presents a sustained and coherent theory of the emotions, and one which draws extensively on the work of psychologists and physiologists in the area. Dr Lyons starts by giving a thorough and critical survey of other principal theories, before setting out his own 'causal-evaluative' account. In addition to giving an analysis of the nature of emotion - in which, Dr Lyon argues, evaluative attitudes play a crucial part - …

O ne of the single most important developments in the public sector during the last two decades has been the growth of public employee unions. The policy implications of the proliferation of these organizations are varied and complicated, especially in the area of governmental expenditures, where personnel expenses comprise a greater proportion of total service/activity costs than in the private sector. While arguments for and against public unio…

Legislative Evaluation of Social Welfare Programs: The Process and Consequences
Program review has increased substantially in recent years. There has been concern that the upsurge in policy evaluation would be detrimental to social welfare programs, where data is often unavailable, little agreement exists concerning specific goals and documenting success is often virtually impossible. In this analysis we compared the program evaluation of social welfare programs with non-social welfare programs. The review process differed s…
