Language Dominance Shapes Protracted Development of Nonpersonal Clitics (Even) in Cases of Widespread Bilingualism
Little research has explored how language dominance may affect the development and ultimate attainment of morphosyntax in a situation of widespread and social bilingualism, where exposure to both languages starts early on and can be sustained over time. This study investigates the development of three nonpersonal clitics that have received little attention by empirical research cross‐linguistically, namely the partitive and two different oblique …
Does your regional variety help you acquire an additional language
This study investigates Differential Object Marking (DOM) in Italian speakers from two dialectal areas–North and South Italy–learning Spanish. Southern Italo-Romance varieties exhibit a DOM system through a- marking, like Spanish, whereas the Northern varieties, like Standard Italian, only allow DOM with pronouns. Given the structural differences and similarities among these typologically close languages, we ask whether a stigmatized oral regiona…
Filler-gap dependencies in bi- and multilingual grammars
This special issue revisits a classic topic in linguistic theory, A-bar movement, applied to developing and bilingual grammars. We claim that A-bar movement, or filler-gap dependencies, is still the quintessential linguistic phenomenon to illustrate the interaction between the biological endowment, the experience with language (past and present), and other cognitive considerations non-specific to the faculty of language (i.e. the three factors in…
The role of resumption in the acquisition of European Portuguese prepositional relative clauses by Chinese learners
This article reports on an experimental study on the acquisition of prepositional relative clauses in second language European Portuguese by Chinese native speakers. It focuses on the role of resumption, mandatory in prepositional relative clauses in Chinese (the native language of the learners) and non-conventional in European Portuguese (the target language). Results of an oral production task and two online acceptability judgment tasks indicat…
Events always take (place with) ser
The present study aims to throw light on the behavior of the Spanish copulas ser and estar in locative sentences, beyond their classical distinction in terms of Individual-Level (IL) versus Stage-Level (SL) predicates. The behavior of the Spanish copulas in locative contexts constitutes an oddity that we aim to probe here: events ( concierto ‘concert’), despite their clear spatial and temporal anchorage, combine with ser ( El concierto es en Parí…
Null-Prep as a systematic interlanguage phenomenon
This study attempts to explain a systematic phenomenon that has been described in interlanguage grammars crosslinguistically: Null-Prep, which consists of omitting the obligatory preposition in certain movement constructions. We propose that Null-Prep is not related to lack of knowledge of wh-movement, as previously assumed, but to structural complexity; indeed, we consider Null-Prep a movement-derived structure. With evidence from prepositional …
What can the ‘attrition via acquisition’ model predict
In their contribution, Hicks and Domínguez (2020, henceforth H&D), develop a unified formal explanation for language development that accounts for both language acquisition and language attrition. Indeed, they characterize language attrition as a potential outcome of the very same language acquisition process. This approach could seem too ambitious, but it is just logical if one wants to account for the dynamism of bilingualism. The idea that som…
On Convergence, Ongoing Language Change, and Crosslinguistic Influence in Direct Object Expression in Catalan-Spanish Bilingualism
The present study explores two morphological differences in direct object expression between Spanish and Catalan: Differential Object Marking (DOM), and the accusative clitics el /l/ vs. ho /u/. Both phenomena are regulated by semantic features, such as animacy and specificity/definiteness. The study experimentally tested 57 Catalan-Spanish bilinguals with different degrees of language dominance in their comprehension and production of these Cata…

Catalan-Spanish bilingualism continuum
This study investigates the expression of Catalan clitics en and hi , which have no grammatical equivalent in Spanish, in the adult grammar of Catalan-Spanish early bilinguals. Participants ( N = 57), born and raised in Catalonia, are divided into 3 groups according to their onset of acquisition and language use: Spanish-dominant ( n = 20), Balanced Bilinguals ( n = 15) and Catalan-dominant ( n = 22). The results of an Acceptability Judgment Task…
El proceso de socialización de los adolescentes postmodernos
El presente artículo refleja los intereses, opiniones e incertidumbres que envuelven a adolescentes residentes en entornos de fragilidad. Es un estudio que aborda estas circunstancias desde tres barrios del área metropolitana de Valencia. Se analiza el entorno en que socializan: sus relaciones familiares y comunitarias, sus hábitos y percepciones de la realidad sobre la que actúan. Centramos nuestra mirada en ellos y ellas, con la finalidad de id…
Locatives and existentials in L2 Spanish
This study analyses the expression of locative and existential predicates elicited through an oral production task in the speech of two groups of learners of Spanish as a second language (L2) (first language English, n = 18; first language Moroccan Arabic, n = 14), and a native control group ( n = 18). A total of 25,000 words were analysed, with over 1,000 locative and existential predicates. These predicates were coded according to the lexical v…
Assessing Differences and Similarities between Instructed Heritage Language Learners and L2 Learners in Their Knowledge of Spanish Tense-Aspect and Mood (TAM) Morphology
The acquisition of the aspectual difference between the preterit and imperfect in the past tense and the acquisition of the contrast between subjunctive and indicative mood are classic problem areas in second language (L2) acquisition of Spanish by English-speaking learners (Collentine, 1995, 1998, 2003; Salaberry, 1999; Slabakova & Montrul, 2002; Terrell, Baycroft & Perrone, 1987). Similarly, Spanish heritage speakers in the U.S exhibit simplifi…
Gender Agreement in Adult Second Language Learners and Spanish Heritage Speakers
This study investigates knowledge of gender agreement in Spanish L2 learners and heritage speakers, who differ in age and context/mode of acquisition. On some current theoretical accounts, persistent difficulty with grammatical gender in adult L2 acquisition is due to age. These accounts predict that heritage speakers should be more accurate on gender agreement than L2 learners, because their Spanish language acquisition started in infancy. Sixty…
