The preferred height (from the floor) to which nursery school children climbed was studied over a series of five free play sessions. The “preferred height” measures used were the height from the floor to the child's point of support (HS), and the height from the floor to the child's eye-level (HE). The apparatus in the playroom utilized the full nine-foot height of the room and was of three basic types: Flat (boxes), barred (trestles), and unstable (rope-net). Play on these items of apparatus presented differing task complexities which, as expected, created different height preferences for HS and HE. The trend showed preferred height to be inversely related to complexity. No trend toward increased preferred HS or HE was found over sessions. Age did not affect the HS measures significantly, and after taking into account the greater stature of the older children, the HE measures also did not differ significantly
