Playgrounds are a multi-million dollar business, yet they receive very little use. Through used infrequently, playgrounds are a major cause of accidents. Children often resort to hazardous behavior in an attempt to make play on these areas more exciting. Playgrounds could offer a safe and stimulating environment for the child's physical and social development if current research on play behavior is considered in playground design. While designers should consider the behavioral aspects of playgrounds, researchers should consider the design aspects. Some of the critical research on play and play environments is summarized into forty guidelines for playground design. Each research-based conclusion is followed by both a theoretical and a practical implication. The research indicates developmental processes in the establishment of play patterns that could be served best by variable playgrounds. Six conditions are outlined for variable playgrounds, and a practical example illustrates how these guidelines could be used. Assessment of use according to predetermined user objectives is proposed as an essential part of variable playground operation.KEYWORDS: Playground designplay theoryplay researchplayground use
