Edward L. Thorndike announced and elaborated his theory of learning around the turn of the century (Thorndike, 1898; 1911). Often referred to as bond psychology or connectionism, the system he described was the original stimulus-response learning theory and it dominated the field for many years. Hilgard acknowledged the preeminence of Thorndike's work in the 1956 edition of his Theories of Learning with a quote from Tolman (1938, p. 11)
