ing Ideals With Institutional Constraints, Stephen Sweet presents an insightful discussion of the constraints, contradictions, and conflicts facing a teacher who wishes to practice a radical pedagogy in today's academic environment. In fact, by the end of the article one is led to wonder: Why do teachers continue to stretch themselves and their students in the exploration of alternative ways of learning? Actually, in Sweet's critique of professed radical teaching innovations reported in 25 years of Teaching Sociology, he concludes that even these authors are not exploring truly radical pedagogical changes. There are two problems with this conclusion. One, Sweet has not sought out or reviewed other writings by these authors that could further illuminate their attempts to develop a radical pedagogy (I have written two other articles besides the one article I wrote for Teaching Sociology). Two, many of us who have been experimenting with non-mainstream methods of teaching/learning have not publicized-let alone published-our activities, for many of the reasons offered by Sweet.
