Two primary arguments have been submitted by theologians to oppose the ordination of women. The first argument emphasizes the priesthood itself and supplies reasons why this must be a male role. The second argument against female ordination focuses on women and why the proper role for women dictates exclusion from the priesthood. We suggest that these objections influence congregations’ receptivity to women clergy/priests. We examine the relative effects of image of God and gender ideology on attitudes regarding women clergy/priests. The analysis is then extended to the relationship between these two factors and its indirect impact on attitudes toward women clergy. Both theological arguments significantly impact receptivity toward women clergy/priests for Catholics and non-Catholics
