Qualitative research is becoming increasingly popular amongst curriculum subject specialists and this is noticeable amongst geographical educators seeking alternative approaches to conducting studies concerned with complex human phenomena. It has not been ascertained just what conception geographical educators have of qualitative research. In this paper we seek to address the questions: What is the experience of qualitative research possessed by geographical educators? Do they experience qualitative research in ways described in theoretical publications? We report an international study in which information was gathered from 22 geographical educators drawn from 13 countries. Their experience of qualitative research was analysed using a phenomenological method developed by Giorgo (1986). Seven aspects of the essence of qualitative research were revealed in our study: a non‐dualistic, non‐positivistic, humanistic approach in a natural setting; rich, complex data; local, illuminatory meanings of people's experiences; descriptive, non‐statistical, narrative exploration; theories generated on the basis of connections and analyses of processes; understanding the content of human experience in distinctive contexts; and the active, subjective role of the researcher
