This article presents a model for understanding interpersonal oppression and violence utilized specifically for the purpose of exercising coercive control over a victim--as is the case in domestic violence, rape, and child abuse. The deliberate use of violence for oppression is contrasted with the widely held view, in conflict management and violence prevention curricula, that people resort to violence because they lack alternative skills. The motivation of the perpetrator is explored and the effects of oppression on the victim is outlined, with particular attention to the disabling effects of trauma that render victims unable to effectively utilize conflict management skills developed in the context of a rational approach. The need for an increased awareness of oppressive violence on the part of conflict management and violence prevention practitioners is highlighted
