This study replicared part of a study by Aronson and Carlsmith and added two groups under different instructions. Aronson and Carlsmith reported findings which demonstrated a relationship between expectancy and performance and which were consistent with predictions from dissonance theory. Their data supported the prediction that Ss would sabotage their own good performance in order to reduce cognitive dissonance. The present results for replicated and changed instructional groups were inconsistent with Aronson and Carlsmith's results. It was concluded that the design used to test the hypothesis is much too cumbersome
